Van de Sande Bakhuyzen first learned to draw and paint from Jan Willem Pieneman . He then studied with Simon Andreas Krausz at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten .

He was very successful from a young age. In 1821 he received a Medal of Honor from the Royal Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts in an exhibition in Brussels , followed in 1822 by a Medal for the Promotion of Fine Arts in Antwerp . In the same year he became a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam . He was later elected director of the Hague Academy .

In 1834 he traveled to Germany for the first time to capture new motifs. In 1841 he traveled to Germany again, this time with his pupil at the time, Willem Roelofs , who later also became very famous.

As a teacher he was very active and took on students until shortly before his death. Some of his late students continued studying with his son Julius in the same studio after his death .

style

He is known for his detailed landscapes of livestock, influenced by Paulus Potter , who painted similar scenes in the Golden Age . He painted these scenes not only because he liked them very much, but also out of commercial interest .

For van de Sande Bakhuyzen, the drawing and the detailed sketching of the landscapes and animals was extremely important. His students were only allowed to pick up a brush when they had mastered it. He mostly painted summer landscapes, but also a small number of winter scenes. His painting style is very similar to that of Andreas Schelfhout (1787–1870), who was a good friend of his and who also painted with him.
