Henri Bremond

Henri Bremond (born July 31, 1865 in Aix-en-Provence , Département Bouches-du-Rhône , † August 17, 1933 in Arthez-d'Asson , Département Pyrénées-Atlantiques ) was a French literary critic, theologian and writer, Catholic philosopher with modernist sympathies, at times Jesuit .

Life

The son of a notary joined the Society of Jesus at the age of 17 and spent his novitiate in England. He was ordained a priest on September 8, 1892 . In 1901 he met George Tyrrell , with whom he has been close friends ever since. In 1904 Bremond left the Jesuits again because of his non-conformist temperament. The Archbishop of Aix-en-Provence, François Bonnifay, accepted him into the diocese clergy. Assistance at Tyrrell's funeral, at which Bremond, who had stood by the dying man, blessed the grave in civilian clothes, earned him a temporary suspension from the priesthood. His work Sainte Chantal was placed on the Index librorum prohibitorum in 1913 . The index reviewer was Joseph Lemius, the main author of the Pascendi encyclical , who discovered modernist tendencies in the work.

The French writer and founder of the Equipes Socials , Robert Garric, reports on the appearance of Henri Bremond: The Abbé was tall, gaunt, even huge; he looked at one from above, with a lively look from which the mischief flashed out; His lips tight and pressed together, he sprinkled in his subtle remarks, sprayed and directed the conversation.

Bremond wrote for the Annales de philosophie chrétienne , the Correspondant , the Revue des Deux Mondes and the Revue de Paris . He was also a prolific author of books on literary subjects and Catholicism.

As successor to Louis Duchesne , he was elected a member of the Académie française in 1923 ( Fauteuil 36 ). He was also an officer in the Legion of Honor .

reception

His major works include the unfinished, monumental, eleven-volume Histoire littéraire du sentiment religieux en France depuis la fin des guerres de religion jusqu'à nos jours (1916–1936) and La Poésie pure  : Un débat sur la poésie. La poésie et les poètes (1926), which he wrote with Robert de Souza. His main research area was the ascetic and mystical literature of the École française de spiritualité , a French direction of spirituality. He was also one of the earliest biographers of John Henry Newman . The poet Maurice Martin du Gard , also a member of the Legion of Honor, attested Bremond une passion littéraire effrénée (an unbridled passion for literature).

The assignment to the modernists is relativized nowadays. The correspondence with Maurice Blondel was published around 1970 and sparked a new interest in the work of Henri Bremond.
