Joplin is a city with 52,195 inhabitants (2016) in the US state Missouri . It is located 109 km west of Springfield , 168 km northeast of Tulsa , 91 km north of Rogers , 417 km southwest of St. Louis and 224 km south of Kansas City in the metropolitan area and belongs to Jasper County and Newton Counties .

According to the United States Census Bureau , Joplin has an area of ​​81.6 km², of which 81.4 km² is land and 0.2 km² (= 0.25%) is water. The urban area is drained by Joplin Creek, Turkey Creek, Silver Creek and Shoal Creek. Joplin is considered the center of the area known locally as the Four State Area , the border region between Oklahoma , Arkansas , Missouri and Kansas .

Joplin is just north of Interstate 44 . In the last few years the new development areas have developed mainly towards the north towards Webb City . The former US Route 66 runs through Joplin. The name of the city of Joplin is also mentioned in the song Route 66 named after the street . In a north-south direction, the city traverses US Highway 71 and, further west of it, Missouri Route 43 .

Tornado on May 22, 2011

On late Sunday afternoon on May 22, 2011, a devastating tornado of level 5 on the Fujita scale struck the town of 50,000 people in the American Midwest. The tornado quickly grew to a width of around 1.6 km and devastated around 25% of all buildings on its path through the south of the city.

The tornado made contact with the ground for the first time at around 3:34 p.m. local time, before dissipating again at 6:12 p.m. In total, the tornado claimed 162 lives. The Joplin tornado is the seventh deadliest of all tornadoes ever recorded in the USA and also one of the most expensive to have ever raged.
