Henriette Brey ( pseudonym : Enrica van Bree , born November 15, 1875 as Maria Henriette Brey in Capellen near Geldern ; † May 27, 1953 in Ramersdorf near Bonn ) was a German writer .

Life

Brey came from a Catholic family; she was the fourth of fifteen children to be a decorative painter . In the first year of life she developed bone tuberculosis ; this disease shaped her entire life. From 1880 to 1887 she attended elementary school in Capellen and from 1887 to 1891 a boarding school in Gangelt ( Heinsberg district ); During this time she was operated on several times. Brey intended to become a teacher ; In 1891 she had to break off the entrance exam at the teachers' college in Xanten because of the onset of paralysis and new operations.

Brey stayed in her parents' house again in the following years, where she devoted herself to reading, painting and writing. From 1894 onwards the first literary works appeared which she had to dictate because of her disability; The first book was published in 1912. From 1915 Henriette Brey lived with two of her sisters in Oberhausen , from 1916 in Rheinhausen and from the early twenties in Elberfeld . Further longer stays in hospital followed: she was treated in the Marienhospital in Duisburg-Hochfeld until 1921 and in the St. Josef Hospital in Wuppertal-Elberfeld from 1921 to 1943 . After her health had deteriorated significantly in 1922, there was an improvement in 1934, so that Brey was able to walk again with the help of a corset and was even able to take some trips. In 1940 she had to undergo several operations again because of a laryngitis . In 1943, after the heavy air raid on Wuppertal-Barmen , she fled with the help of her family via Filsen am Rhein and Waldbröl to Oberpleis . From 1951 she lived in Wuppertal again . After her health deteriorated dramatically in 1953, she was cared for in the Sacred Heart Monastery of the Franciscan Sisters in Ramersdorf near Bonn , where we also died. Henriette Brey was buried in Wuppertal-Sonnborn .

Brey was the author of novels , short stories, and spiritual writings that were strongly influenced by her Catholic piety. In 1936 she received the papal order " Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice ", in 1953 she was awarded an honorary salary by the Ministry of Culture of North Rhine-Westphalia .
