Henry Huntington

Henry Huntington (born May 28, 1766 in Norwich , New London County , Colony of Connecticut , † 1846 in Rome , Oneida County , New York ) was an American lawyer, businessman and politician.

Business life

Henry Huntington attended Dartmouth College , where he graduated in 1783 and then took up the practice of law, but gave it up again for economic reasons. He founded a company in New York and also had a stake in the company "Geo. Huntington & Co. ”in Rome (New York). In the following time his main interest was the property speculation. He soon moved to Rome, where he spent the rest of his life as a successful businessman. He was elected President of the Bank of Utica . He held this position until his resignation, shortly before his death, and only gave it up because of his poor health, which prevented him from visiting Utica weekly.

He was married to Catharine Mary Havens (1771-1839).

Political career

Henry Huntington was also involved in New York state politics . From 1805 to 1807 he was a member of the New York Senate . During this time, in 1806, he was also a member of the “Council of Appointments”. From 1816 to 1817 he was a member of the New York State Assembly . Huntington was a member of the Constituent Assembly in 1821, which revised the New York State Constitution. He was also active in the two presidential elections of 1808 and 1812 as a presidential elector. He also ran unsuccessfully for the office of lieutenant governor of New York in 1822 and 1826 .
