Herbert Mang

Herbert A. Mang (born January 5, 1942 in Vienna ) is an Austrian civil engineer. Mang was President of the Austrian Academy of Sciences from 2003 to 2006 .

Life

After graduating from high school in Vienna, Herbert Mang studied civil engineering at the Vienna University of Technology from 1960 to 1967 . In Vienna he became a member of the Catholic Austrian University Association Nordgau Vienna in the ÖCV . In 1970, he was first at the Vienna University of Technology with honors doctorate in 1974 was followed by a promotion to Ph. D. at Texas Technological University. He completed his habilitation in 1977 at the Vienna University of Technology in the subject of strength theory with special emphasis on the finite element method . The work was awarded the Cardinal Innitzer Promotion Prize for Natural Sciences .

After working as a research assistant at the Vienna University of Technology (1968–1979) and as a Fulbright Fellow at the Texas Technological University, USA (1971–1973) and as a research associate at Cornell University , he was appointed Associate Professor at the Vienna University of Technology in 1979 . In 1981 he was appointed full professor for strength theory at TU Graz , in 1982 he was appointed full professor for elasticity and strength theory at TU Vienna. A year later he became head of the Institute for Strength of Materials at the Vienna University of Technology.

In addition to many external and internal tasks at the Vienna University of Technology, such as that of dean and prorector, he was Secretary General of the Austrian Academy of Sciences from 1995 to 2003 and its President from 2003 to 2006.

Herbert Mang has published papers on structural engineering and strength theory.
