Herbert Daniel (born March 30, 1926 in Treptow an der Rega ; † February 18, 2019 ) was a German experimental physicist .

Life

Herbert Daniel was drafted as a flak helper in 1943 and joined the Wehrmacht in 1944 . After graduating from high school he studied in Heidelberg from 1947 , where he received his doctorate in 1954 with Walther Bothe with a dissertation on the construction of a magnetic double-lens β spectrometer and the β decay of Mg27 . In 1961 he completed his habilitation. He then worked at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research and at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg. In 1968 he was appointed to the chair for experimental physics at the Technical University of Munich . He also conducted research at the Institute of Atomic Research at Iowa State University in Ames , at CERN , the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble and in Los Alamos at LAMPF (Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility, now: Los Alamos Neutron Science Center).

Daniel first worked in the field of nuclear physics . He measured the beta decay spectra of atomic nuclei using precise beta spectrometers newly constructed by himself . Later he carried out experiments on muonic , pionic and antiprotonic atoms (including muon-induced nuclear fusion ) at CERN and the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen , Switzerland . However, his interest extended to a wide range of topics in physics, which is evident in his textbook publications. After his retirement in 1994, he dealt with research on alternative power plant types.

Herbert Daniel also published a volume of poetry: Compressions. Old verses - made new and rethought .
