Herbert Doms

Herbert Doms (born April 14, 1890 in Ratibor , Upper Silesia , † September 22, 1977 in Münster ) was a German Catholic moral theologian .

Life and work

Doms was the son of the tobacco industrialist Franz Doms and Maria Doms geb. Rattle. Julius Dom's older brother was a tobacco industrialist in Ratibor and Orsoy . His great-grandfather was the tobacco industrialist in Ratibor Joseph Doms (1780-1853). He was a nephew of the artist and writer Wilhelm Doms (1868–1957).

Herbert Doms attended grammar school in Ratibor from 1899 to 1908 , then he studied natural sciences in Munich, Berlin and Breslau. In 1914 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil. at the Zoological Institute of the University of Munich .

From 1914 to 1918 he was with the German Red Cross and soldier in the First World War . In 1919 he became an assistant at the Zoological Institute in Breslau. There he wrote a much-cited study on Aging, Death and Rejuvenation (1921).

He then studied Catholic theology. He was ordained a priest on March 2, 1924 in Breslau, after which he worked as a chaplain in Breslau and Mühlbock (Neumark). In 1927 he received his doctorate as Dr. theol. and in 1930 the habilitation in dogmatics at the University of Breslau . From 1930 to 1946 he was chair in Braunsberg, Freiburg, Breslau and Münster. From 1946 to 1948 Doms was a lecturer in fundamental theology in Freiburg i. Br. And from 1948 to 1956 professor of moral theology at the University of Münster .
