Herbert E. Brekle

Herbert Ernst Brekle (born June 11, 1935 in Stuttgart ; † May 6, 2018 in Regensburg ) was a German typographer and linguist .

Life

Brekle worked from 1951 to 1957 as a typesetter , proofreader and printer . He then studied English , Romance studies and philosophy at the University of Tübingen from 1958 to 1963 , where he received his doctorate in 1963. In 1969 he completed his habilitation at the University of Tübingen, where he was working as a research assistant at Hans Marchand's seminar for English philology ; in the years 1967–69 he was supported by a habilitation grant from the German Research Foundation.

In 1969, Brekle accepted the chair for general linguistics at the University of Regensburg , which he held until his retirement in 2001. 1974–75 he was visiting professor at McGill University in Montréal ( Canada ), another followed ten years later at the Université de Paris VII (1984–85). From 1984 to 1986 Brekle also held the office of chairman of the German Society for Linguistics .

In addition to his academic work, Brekle was also active in politics, where he held various offices: from 1960–61 he was chairman of the AStA and the Baden-Württemberg State Association of the Association of German Student Unions. From 1972 to 1978 and again from 1990 to 1996 Brekle was a member of the City Council of Regensburg and from 1978 to 1982 a member of the Upper Palatinate District Assembly . Between 1978 and 1986 he also acted as chairman of the Regensburg district group of the Federal Nature Conservation in Bavaria .

Brekel's main areas of work were semantics , word formation theory , the history of linguistics , writing research and typography .
