Herbert Küas took part in the Second World War from 1939 . After his return due to injury in 1943, he worked as an assistant at the University of Leipzig, later as a lecturer at the State Building School in Leipzig. From 1950 he conducted research at the Institute for Monument Preservation and the State Museum for Prehistory in Dresden. He then worked from 1959 to 1965 at the Department of Art History at the German Academy of Sciences . He then retired, but presented numerous other publications that mainly dealt with the city center of Leipzig in the Middle Ages, selected problems of the older building history in the Leipzig region as well as the turn from Romanesque to Gothic and the interrelationships between architecture and sculpture.
