Herbert Lüthy (physicist)

Herbert Lüthy (born September 26, 1914 in St. Gallen ; † August 15, 1996 in Basel ) was a Swiss medical physicist .

Life

Lüthy was born as the son of the first public prosecutor and general procurator of the canton St. Gallen Ferdinand Lüthy and attended the humanistic high school of St. Gallen until he obtained his Matura. Then from 1934 he studied physics and physiology at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen . In the same year he became active in the Corps Hannovera Göttingen . As an inactive , he moved to the University of Leipzig , the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg , the Hessische Ludwigs-Universität and the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin . From 1939 he studied at the University of Bern and the University of Friborg (Switzerland) . In Friborg in the Üechtland he also joined the student association “Die Rodensteiner” in the Swiss Arms Ring .

During the Second World War, Lüthy was a soldier in the Swiss Army from 1940 to 1945 . The University of Basel doctorate him in 1942 to Dr. phil. From 1945 to 1950 he trained in physiology in Bern and Stockholm. He was visiting professor at Uppsala University and the University of Sheffield . In 1950 he received further training in radiology in Bern. In 1954 he became head of the isotope laboratory at the Basel Cantonal Hospital , which later became the University Institute for Medical Radiology. Lüthy completed his habilitation in 1961 at the Medical Faculty of the University of Basel and received the anniversary award of the Swiss Roentgen Society . He was a member of the Swiss Radiation Protection Commission , a founding member of the Swiss Society for Radiation Biology (SGS), which later became the Swiss Society for Radiation Biology and Medical Physics (SGSMP) , and until 1964 head of the ABC service in the canton of Basel . The University of Basel appointed him (as a non-physician) as associate professor in 1968 . At the medical faculty he read radiological physics and experimental radiation biology. In 1980 he retired .

Lüthy was a recognized student historian on the side. His publications on the history of student associations are often wrongly attributed to Herbert Lüthy (historian) .
