Herbert Manfred Hoffmann

Herbert Manfred Hoffmann (born February 13, 1930 in Brieg , Province of Silesia ; † August 24, 2018 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German organist and church musician .

Live and act

Herbert Manfred Hoffmann completed his studies as organist with Max Drischner in Brieg and Johannes Piersig in Breslau . In 1946 he moved to the Evangelical Church Music Institute in Heidelberg , where he passed the A-exam as a church musician in 1948. a. Hermann Meinhard Poppen , Helmut Tramnitz and Wolfgang Fortner .

After a brief activity in Weinsberg in 1950/51, he moved to Frankfurt am Main . From 1953 he worked as an organist and cantor at the Emmaus Church and since 1978 as a church musician for the Evangelical Regional Association at the Heiliggeistkirche at the Dominican monastery .

In 1952 Hoffmann founded the oratorio choir Frankfurter Kantatenkreis (today Frankfurter Kantatenchor ), which he directed until 2004 and with which he performed important works by Bach , Schütz , Brahms , Mozart , Fauré , Verdi and Dvořák , mainly in the Heiliggeistkirche and also in of the old opera . He worked there a. a. with vocal soloists at the Frankfurt Opera and for many years with the orchestra of the Frankfurt Philharmonic Society , which u. a. consisted of members of the Frankfurt Opera House and Museum Orchestra and the Hessian Radio Symphony Orchestra .

On the 50th anniversary of Max Reger 's death , Hoffmann initiated the Frankfurt Max Reger Days in 1966 , which were also held in 1967 and 1968 due to the positive response. The Frankfurt Organ Days in the Heiliggeistkirche, an international organ concert cycle with national and international soloists , which have taken place annually since 1978 , can also be traced back to his initiative. From 1979 to 2013 he was also chairman of the Frankfurt am Main church music association founded by Arnold Thrun in 1950 . The direction of both the choir and the church music club was then taken over by his son, the church musician Frank Hoffmann .

Hoffmann has given concerts as an organist as well as a conductor and on concert tours with the choir in France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Poland, Croatia, Slovakia and North America. He played numerous records and CDs.

In 2005 he was awarded the Philipp-Jakob-Spener-Medal by the Evangelical Church for his services to church music .

Hoffmann's grave is located in the New Bockenheim Cemetery in Frankfurt.
