Herbert-Ernst Vahl (born October 9, 1896 in Posen , † July 22, 1944 near Thessaloníki ) was a German officer , SS brigade leader and major general of the Waffen SS .

Life

Vahl joined the Grenadier Regiment "King Wilhelm I" (2nd West Prussian) No. 7 as a volunteer at the beginning of the First World War , was promoted to officer during the war and was also awarded both classes of the Iron Cross . After the war he was accepted into the Reichswehr and later commanded the 14th company of the 16th cavalry regiment until he took over a motorcycle rifle company.

At the beginning of the Second World War , he commanded Panzer Division 65 of the 6th Panzer Division of the Wehrmacht and took part in the attack on Poland with her . In May 1940 he took over Panzer Division 101, which he commanded until December 1941 and with which he took part in the 1940 Western campaign , the Balkan campaign and the attack on the Soviet Union . On December 13, 1941, Vahl was promoted to colonel and took command of the 29th Panzer Regiment of the 12th Panzer Division. On August 1, 1942, he joined the Waffen SS and took command of the tank regiment of the 2nd SS Panzer Division "Das Reich" .

When division commander Georg Keppler failed due to illness, Vahl took over command of the division until he was wounded on March 18, 1943 near Belgorod . Kurt Brasack then became the division commander for a short time . After recovering, Vahl was transferred to the position of tank inspector in the SS headquarters in July 1943, which he held until July 13, 1944. He was then given command of the 4th SS Police Panzer Grenadier Division in Greece . On July 22nd, he was killed there in a car accident.
