Heribert Smolinsky

Heribert Smolinsky (born November 22, 1940 in Waldbreitbach ; † July 28, 2012 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German Catholic clergyman and professor of Middle and New Church History.

Heribert Smolinsky initially trained as a banker (1957–1960), but made up his Abitur in 1965. He then studied Catholic theology in Trier and Tübingen from 1965 to 1970 . He received his doctorate in 1973 in Würzburg with a thesis on Domenico de 'Domenichi (1416–1478) and his work De potestate pape et termino eius . On June 16, 1974, he was ordained priest in the High Cathedral in Trier and worked as a chaplain in Trier until 1976 . He then worked from 1976 to 1982 as a university assistant in the church history department at the theological faculty in Würzburg. In 1981 he completed his habilitation in Würzburg with a thesis on Augustin von Alveldt and Hieronymus Emser .

From 1983 to 1988 he held the chair for Middle and Modern Church History at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the Ruhr University in Bochum . In 1988 he moved to the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . In 1995 he turned down an offer from the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen . Since 1998 Smolinsky was a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . From 1999 to 2004 he was chairman of the Society for the Publication of the Corpus Catholicorum . As part of the Dies Universitatis , Smolinsky received the University Medal of the Albert Ludwig University on June 21, 2006.

The main research focus of Smolinsky was on the history of the Reformation .
