Augustin von Alveldt (also Alveld , Alvelt ; * around 1480 in Alfeld , near Hildesheim , † around 1535 probably in Halle (Saale) ) was a Franciscan . The theologian was one of the earliest and most determined opponents of Martin Luther and the Reformation .

Life

Nothing is known about Augustin von Alveldt's parents and his youth, he probably studied in a convent school . Augustin von Alveldt possessed great linguistic skills, was fluent in Latin , was familiar with the classics, had knowledge of Greek and Hebrew ; he was also familiar with the humanistic writings of his time. He was a man of keen and analytical mind.

In 1520 he became a lecturer in biblical interpretation in the convent of the Franciscans in Leipzig . In the same year he wrote the book Super apostolica sede published in Leipzig , in which he declared anyone a heretic who did not accept the divine right of the papacy . Martin Luther had his famulus, the Augustinian Johannes Lonicer , respond to this writing with a reply. When Augustin von Alveldt published a revised translation in German shortly afterwards, Luther wrote the reply himself. At the end of May 1520, it appeared as the work Vom Papsttum zu Rom gegen die famous Romanisten zu Leipzig . In an answer to this, Augustine raised the question of whether the empowerment of Holy Communion could only be justified in the form of the bread from the Bible. Luther responded to this question and linked the answer to an investigation into the question of the sacraments in general, which appeared in October 1520 as the extensive work De captivitate Babylonica ecclesiae praeludium .

On January 20, 1521, Augustin von Alveldt led a public theological dispute in Weimar about the merits of monastic life between Johann Lange and Mechler on the one hand and the Franciscans on the other. A similar dispute against Lange followed on January 15, 1522 in the Frauenkirche in Weimar, in which Augustine defended monastic life against the reformers. From 1523 he held the post of guardian of the monastery in Halle, in 1529 he became provincial of his order in Saxony.
