Herkimer is a city with the status " Town " in the US state of New York with 7662 inhabitants (2013). In the urban area is also the Village Herkimer , which is the administrative seat ( county seat ) of Herkimer County .
geography
The city is bordered to the south by the Mohawk River and to the east by West Canada Creek . It is located about 20 kilometers southeast of Utica and 110 kilometers east of Syracuse . The Interstate 90 ( New York State Thruway ) affected Herkimer in the south.
history
The first settlers in the area came from the Electoral Palatinate . The place was named in honor of Brigadier General Nicholas Herkimer , who had made great contributions to the region during the American War of Independence . The city was officially founded in 1788.
Today, the inhabitants of Herkimer are primarily employed in administration and in medium-sized agricultural and industrial companies. Tourism is becoming increasingly important. So the area is also visited by mineral collectors looking for the Herkimer diamonds . There are also boat trips on the historic Erie Canal , the area of which has been designated a National Heritage Area due to its historical significance .
