The Hercules Mountain Run is an annual mountain run through the UNESCO World Heritage Site Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe , which has already hosted the Hessian Mountain Running Championships several times.

The Hercules Mountain Run was first held in 1990. In 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013 the Hessian Mountain Running Championships were integrated into the Hercules Mountain Run, which means that several well-known top athletes competed on the 6.2 km long route, with the exception of 2002, ran from 1992 to 2018.

Record winner of the Herkules mountain run is Heiko Baier ( LG Braunschweig ) with a total of five wins, record winner Monika Wöhleke ( PSV Grün-Weiß Kassel ) with a total of nine wins.

Until 2015, the Hercules Mountain Run was organized by Winfried Aufenanger , long-time national marathon trainer .

In addition to the Frankfurt Marathon , Kassel Marathon and the Kaufungen New Year's Eve Run, the Herkules Mountain Run is one of four running events that the Hessischer Rundfunk reports on annually in the hessenschau .

Route

The new running route of the Hercules Mountain Run (since 2019) with a length of 6.75 km starts at about the level of the former gatekeeper's house at the junction of Wilhelmshöher Allee and runs past the Lac below Wilhelmshöhe Castle up to the Fontänenteich with Jussow Temple and past at the aqueduct to the hell pond below the devil's bridge. Next stops on the running route are the Hermitage of Socrates, Entenfang and Löwenburg; the castle meadows are circled once. Passing the Steinhöfer waterfall and the Kaskaden-Wirtschaft you will reach the Neptunbassin at the foot of the Kaskaden. On the last three kilometers, the runners leave the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe and run through the Habichtswald up to the Hercules.

The old running route of the Hercules Mountain Run (until 2018) with a length of 6.2 km led from the reform school in Kassel's district of Bad Wilhelmshöhe via Wilhelmshöher Allee and Mulangstraße up to Löwenburg . Passing the Steinhöfer waterfall and the Plutogrotto, the Kaskaden-Restaurant was reached via the Tannenchaussee and finally the destination directly at the Herkules via the Schlangenstrasse . The steepest ascent of the continuously paved old running track was on the Tannenchaussee.

In addition to the main run, a relay run (three participants) will be held, the two turning points of which were at the Löwenburg and the Kaskaden-Restaurant until 2018, and since 2019 at the Teufelsbrücke and the Kaskaden-Restaurant.

statistics

The Steinhöfer waterfall is also directly on the route
