Herman F. Zimmerman

Herman F. Zimmerman (born April 19, 1935 in Springfield , Illinois ) is an American art director and production designer . He is best known for his work on the Star Trek television series and films.

Career

Originally Herman Zimmerman wanted to be an actor and therefore studied acting and directing at Northwestern University , but then switched to stage technology and, after completing his studies, became a lecturer in drama at the university there. In addition to his work as a lecturer, he also worked as a technical director and set designer at the local theater. Herman Zimmerman began his television career in 1965 as assistant art director at NBC Studios with the series Zeit der Sehnsucht . From 1971 to 1989 he worked as an art director on various television series, dramas, thrillers and other productions. He moved to Paramount Pictures in 1987 with the start of the science fiction television series Spaceship Enterprise: The Next Century . He was also a production designer for the series Deep Space Nine , Enterprise and the movies from Star Trek V: On the Edge of the Universe to Star Trek: Nemesis . At the beginning of the 1990s he also worked as a consultant and supported the Paramount Park Design and Entertainment team in adapting the theme parks acquired by Paramount Communication . In 1995 he conceived the Star Trek exhibition Star Trek Exhibition for Edinburgh ( Scotland ), which then presented the history of Star Trek as a mobile museum for three years at various locations in Europe. He also worked as a consultant for the Star Trek Experience exhibition and visitor attraction at the Las Vegas Hilton .

Awards

Herman Zimmerman was nominated four times for an Emmy , namely for Outstanding Art Direction for a Series in 1993, 1997, 1998 and 1999; However, he did not win it. The nominations were all for the television series Deep Space Nine . However, the Art Directors Guild (ADG) awarded him the Excellence in Production Design Award (1997 ) for this series and the Lifetime Achievement Award (2013) for his life's work .
