Hermann is a city in Missouri in the United States and has been the administrative seat of Gasconade County since 1842 . It is located south of the Missouri River in the Missouri Rhineland , a wine-growing region founded by German emigrants in the mid-19th century .

history

The place was founded in 1837 by the German settlement company in Philadelphia , which also bought 45.73 km² of land on the Gasconade River for settlement. It was named after Hermann the Cheruscan and was to become a self-sufficient colony with agriculture and industry. Until the beginning of the First World War , Hermann was very adapted to German culture. With the United States fighting Germany in Europe , some Americans were concerned that Germans were in the center of their country. That is why speaking of the German language was banned and stopped there.

After viticulture flourished for the first time in the mid-19th century, the wine-growing region was officially recognized in 1983 as one of the first Hermann American Viticultural Area in the USA . Although the cultivation had come to a standstill due to prohibition , it revived in the 1960s. Today the area includes seven wine-growing businesses.

In 2009 the place celebrated the 2000th anniversary of the Varus Battle .

Events

Hermann organizes a sausage festival on the last weekend in March, a May festival on the third weekend in May , which first took place there in 1870, and an Oktoberfest in October . In addition, viticulture is also of touristic importance.

Partnerships

Hermann has a German twin town in Bad Arolsen (Hessen). In Hermann (as in Bad Arolsen) there is a memorial that commemorates this partnership.
