Coma of Souls is the fifth studio album by the German thrash metal - band Kreator . It was released on Noise Records in October 1990 . It is considered to be the band's best-selling album ahead of its predecessor Extreme Aggression , to which it is also stylistically similar, even if it featured a bit more progressive riffing and a few acoustic intros in some places . Coma of Souls is the first album with the new guitarist Frank Blackfire .

History of origin

After the first appearance in East Berlin in March 1990 (DVD At the Pulse of Capitulation ) and the first headlining tour through the USA with Suicidal Tendencies , on which Frank Blackfire played for the first time instead of Jörg Trebziatowski, Kreator went back with Randy in the summer of 1990 Burns, who had already produced Extreme Aggression , entered the studio in Los Angeles . Frank Blackfire, who had previously recorded Agent Orange with Sodom , immediately influenced the songwriting :

“Frank had a positive influence on the overall style of Kreator. Everything is much more complex now; To some ears what we are doing now will seem a little slower, but in reality everything is just a little more controlled. "

People of the Lie was chosen as the first video . In 1991 Hallucinative Comas was released on VHS, which also contained Twisted Urges , Coma of Souls and Terror Zone . It was re-released in the Director's Cut on the DVD At the Pulse of Surrender . From autumn 1990 the band went on tour with Death , which took them through 15 European countries as well as through Japan , the USA and Mexico . In early 1991 the USA part of the tour began with Morgoth and Blitzspeer . However, early in this part of the tour there were issues with Epic , the band's US distributor. The distribution agreement between this company and Noise Records was dissolved, so Kreator in the USA had to do without distribution and promotion . In late 1991 the band performed at the Christmas Metal Meetings with bands such as Motörhead , Sepultura and Morbid Angel . In the spring of 1992 she played in South America and Israel . In retrospect, Mille Petrozza was not entirely satisfied with the production of Coma of Souls - the band had to make too many compromises in the studio.

reception

On Powermetal.de Alex Straka called Coma of Souls album, which "should make the reputation Kreators as one of detailfreudigsten and innovative thrash bands in Germany unentrückbar." Songs like the title track, as well as People of the Lie and terror zone , he lifted as a live classic. Eduardo Rivadavia from allmusic.com called the “formula for success” of Extreme Aggression a little “tired”, but “technically adept Thrash” is offered. The rating was four out of five stars. In what was then Rock Hard , Frank Albrecht awarded nine out of ten points. He spoke of an increase over the previous album, the songs looked "mature" and the record seemed "like a closed unit".
