Hermann Bogner

Hermann Bogner (born May 28, 1921 in Weiden in the Upper Palatinate ; † September 28, 2012 in Munich ) was a German agricultural scientist and university professor.

Live and act

Bogner was born into a civil servant family and graduated from high school in his hometown . In 1944 he was released from military service so that he could begin his studies at the Tetschen- Liebwerd Agricultural University , which he continued at the Hohenheim Agricultural University after the end of the war and graduated from the Technical University of Munich in Weihenstephan as a qualified farmer . During the subsequent activity as a trainee lawyer at the animal breeding office in Weilheim, he received his doctorate in Weihenstephan in 1948. agr. Later he worked at the breeding value test center Neustadt an der Aisch (with Karl Eibl) and finally took over the management of the state control association for Bavaria. Here he introduced the use of punch cards as the first computerized method for evaluating performance results and estimating the breeding values ​​of bulls.

In 1959 he succeeded O. Sommer as head of the Bavarian State Institute for Animal Breeding (BLT) in Grub b. Munich transferred, which he kept until 1986, most recently with the title of President. During this long period of time, he had a decisive influence on the development of many priorities and through the support of his employees:

  • Reinforcement of research activities in the BLT,
  • Introduction of population genetic methods in Bavarian animal breeding (with G. Averdunk),
  • Increase in milk yield in cattle,
  • Meat production for cattle, pigs and fallow deer
    • Introduction of the meat performance test in the cattle station
    • Expansion of the pig testing facility in Grub
    • Construction of an experimental slaughterhouse in Grub
  • Start of hybrid breeding in pigs (with G. Averdunk)
  • Construction of a laboratory and metabolism test building in the area of ​​feeding
  • Construction of a building training show to compare modern stable facilities
  • Opportunities for comparative studies in animal husbandry

In the later period, new priorities followed, which are even more important today:

  • Commitment to the observance of animal welfare in agriculture,
  • Improvement of animal welfare on the basis of scientifically based results,
  • Preservation of rare and endangered breeds of domestic animals.

Bogner wrote several textbooks on beef production, the behavior of farm animals and finally on breeding and animal production in general. He supervised 18 doctoral students and 60 scholarship holders (mainly from Poland). In 1968 he qualified as a professor at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna for the subject of animal production, where he received the license to teach at the Institute for Farm Animal Science. From 1972 he was a lecturer in the field of behavioral research in farm animals and from 1973 to 1979 for performance tests and breeding value estimates. In 1978 he was awarded the title of associate professor for animal production - meanwhile by the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna. 1980-87 he treated the new topic of farm animal ethology in his lectures . As a retired man, he moderated numerous conferences as part of the follow-up seminars in Poland of the Hanns Seidel Foundation .
