Hermann Bothe

Hermann Bothe (born June 3, 1940 in Hildesheim ) is a German botanist and retired professor at the Botanical Institute of the University of Cologne .

biography

Hermann Bothe completed a teaching degree in biology , mathematics and chemistry at the University of Göttingen and received his doctorate in the field of " Plant Biochemistry ". As a postdoctoral fellow he was in Berkeley , USA , and in Bochum . After completing his habilitation in Bochum in 1975, he took up a position as a lecturer at the University of Heidelberg and in 1978 was offered a professorship ( C3 ) at the University of Cologne. Longer research stays took him to Brighton ( England ), Corvallis ( Oregon ), Rio de Janeiro ( Brazil ) and Wuhan ( PR China ). His areas of work include physiology , biochemistry, molecular biology and the taxonomy of the interactions between plants and microorganisms. He has published over 200 original publications in scientific journals, plus many popular science articles in various media. In his publications, he is particularly dedicated to nitrogen fixation and hydrogen metabolism in cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), salt and heavy metal resistance in plants, mycorrhizal symbiosis and the characterization of bacterial and fungal populations in soils with molecular biological principles Methods.

As an academic teacher, Bothe has led numerous botanical excursions for students and laypeople in the greater Cologne area and to various destinations in Europe. He is the author of several hiking guides with a botanical focus and a privately versed philatelist with several publications on the subject.
