Hermann Eschenburg (born April 9, 1872 in Lübeck ; † January 1954 ) was a Lübeck businessman and politician.

Life

origin

An old Lübeck tradition was united in the name Eschenburg. The multi-branched family has provided leading men in many areas of the Lübeck government, administration and judiciary. His father, Johann Hermann Eschenburg , became a member of the Senate for many years after working for the Chamber of Commerce for several years. Presiding mayor there for several years. His brother, Karl Eschenburg , became the landowner and later Prime Minister of the Free State of Mecklenburg-Schwerin .

career

In 1898 he became a partner in his father's timber business, Jost Hinr, which was founded in 1733 . Havemann & Sohn in Lübeck, today (2014) probably the oldest timber importer in Germany. Hermann Eschenburg was from 1919–1924 and 1926–1932 a member of the Lübeck citizenship and its deputy spokesman , he was also a member of the citizens' committee. He was a civil member (deputy) of the finance committee of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck. From 1911 to 1933 he was President of the Lübeck Chamber of Commerce several times , and in the pre-Prussian period until 1937 he was the board of the Lübeck merchants . At the age of 73, he made himself available again in 1945 for a new start in the self-administration of the Lübeck economy as President of the Chamber of Commerce and Commerce and was also a member of the main committee of the German Industry and Trade Congress .

Medal of honor of the Lübeck Chamber of Commerce

On the occasion of his 25-year membership in the Chamber of Commerce, Eschenburg was specially honored by Senator Strack at the meeting of the merchants on December 27, 1927 with their medal in gold as the highest distinction and a certificate from the Lübeck Chamber of Commerce. Up until then he had led her as President for five terms. As such, he represented the interests of Lübeck trade, shipping and industry in a leading position during the revolution and later inflation and saved its economic life from collapse.

But in addition to trade and traffic in Lübeck, President Eschenburg also had an important voice in the associations that encompassed the entire empire. The German government appointed him as an expert in the trade treaty negotiations between Germany and the Soviet Union . For this purpose the Praeses traveled several times to Moscow for deliberations.

Hermann Eschenburg was an enthusiastic ocean sailor and in 1912 had Max Oertz build the 12mR yacht Heti , which is still in service today as a classic yacht . He was from 1912 to 1920 board member of the Travemuende Week with organizing Luebeck Yacht Club (LYC).
