Paul Strack

Johann Paul Leberecht Strack (born January 7, 1863 in Rio de Janeiro , † November 13, 1930 in Lübeck ) was a German wholesale merchant and senator of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck.

Life

Strack was born in Rio de Janeiro ( Brazil ) as the son of a Bremen Hanseatic . In the first years of his life he moved to Hamburg with his parents , attended the Johanneum there and passed an Abitur exam in 1882 . He received his commercial training in the Hamburg import , commission and banking business from FW Burchard . After this and a short stay in French Switzerland and England , he moved to America in 1884 . There he spent three years in New York in the company Wiebusch and Hilzer Ltd. , most recently as a member of the board . As such, he traveled to the southern states , Texas , Florida , Louisiana , ... Finally he moved back to Europe in 1888 and, following family ties, moved to Lübeck after a short time in Hamburg in 1889 to become a partner in the machine and sheet metal packaging factory of Fr. Ewers & Co. , his brother-in-law's company . It was to him that the establishment owed its rapid growth, which soon gave it a respected position far beyond the borders of Lübeck. In 1898 the company merged with the cardboard industry in Dresden and became part of the Dresdner Kartonagenfabrik AG . He resigned from the company in order to participate in several industrial companies. Strack withdrew from his business activities for the time being , after having managed their Lübeck branch for two years .

In 1900 Strack was elected a member of the Chamber of Commerce , later also the Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of the board of the Lübeck Industry Association for several years. The first suggestion for the construction of a rail connection to Schlutup was given in one of his lectures in the industrial association. The expansion of the steamship shipping company "Horn" and its relocation from Schleswig to Lübeck can be traced back to his operation. He also played a lively role in enabling the Lübeck blast furnace plant and the establishment of the agricultural headquarters. Strack, himself the owner of a yacht , also advocated the expansion of sailing . He was a member of the board of directors of the Lübeck Yacht Club .

Strack's activity in the service of the wider public began in 1903 when he was elected to the citizenry . As a civil deputy , he was with the building deputy, the sewer administration , the finance department ( Travemünde section ) and the head of the Holy Spirit Hospital . He was elected to its head on January 31, 1906. A year later he was elected to the citizens' committee. As a member of the secret commission for the contract for the new construction of the station , he found the opportunity to utilize his extensive knowledge and business experience.

On Monday, April 22, 1906, in place of Senator Emil Wolpmann , who died on April 3 , the merchant Strack was elected a member of the Senate in accordance with the provisions of the constitution . As this he was a member of the commission for trade and shipping , customs commission , tax authority , building deputation ( pilotage ), sewer construction authority and administrative authority for municipal authorities.

The Society for the Promotion of Charitable Activities elected Strack to its board on November 11, 1913.

He held the office until his death, most recently as a representative of Lübeck in the Reichsrat .

Airport

The Hanseatic sea airport in Travemünde was associated with the name of its creator. This was the monument that he had set for himself. Against all odds , he managed to get the combined sea and land airport on the Priwall , which turned out to be the most ideal place for it. As a token of thanks for Strack's forward-looking sponsorship , a plane with black mourning ribbons circled St. Mary at the hour of the funeral service , which took place inside the church . The memorial speech was given by Wilhelm Jannasch , chief pastor of St. Aegidien .

At the end of 1928, Strack was elected deputy mayor for 1929 and 1930 .
