Hermann F. Sailer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermann F. Sailer (born April 17, 1943 in Erlangen ) is a German oral, maxillofacial and maxillofacial surgeon . He heads the Professor Sailer Clinic in Zurich and is the founder of the Cleft-Children International Foundation .

Life and academic career

Sailer studied medicine from 1961 to 1968, and from 1968 to 1971 dentistry at the University of Erlangen and obtained his doctorate in medicine and doctorate in dentistry. Among other things, he completed advanced training in the fields of internal medicine , gynecology , surgery and maxillofacial surgery (1970 under Gerhard Steinhardt ) and in the field of surgery and trauma surgery (1971/72 at the University of Würzburg , under Ernst Kern). He then went to Zurich to the university hospital there (1972–76). Under the direction of Hugo Obwegeser , Sailer completed his knowledge in the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery. As a result, Sailer became a Research Fellow member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England . He worked in the field of Facial Plastic Surgery in Boston , USA, under the direction of R. Webster. In 1980 Sailer completed his habilitation .

From 1985 Sailer worked as an associate professor for maxillofacial surgery at the University Hospital Zurich. In 1987 he was appointed full professor at the Clinic and Polyclinic for Maxillofacial Surgery of the University Hospital Zurich, the Clinic for Oral Surgery and Oral Diagnosis of the Institute of Dentistry at the University of Zurich and the Department of Maxillofacial Radiology. From 1989 to 1994 he was Medical Director of the Institute for Dentistry at the University of Zurich. Sailer has published over 300 scientific papers in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

In 2001, Sailer founded the Professor Sailer Clinic in Zurich within the Bethanien Clinic. The clinic is active in the field of aesthetic facial, maxillofacial and oral surgery.

research

In 1983 Sailer described a new surgical procedure in which freeze-dried (lyophilized) cartilage from organ donors is used as a substitute for the patient's own bones. The material has proven itself in the following decades for reconstructions of all kinds in the skull, jaw and face area. This saves the patient from having to undergo second operations to remove bone and cartilage. Whole freeze-dried (lyophilized) human mandibles have also been used successfully in patients.

In 1989, Sailer was the first to describe the placement of dental implants at the same time as the reconstruction of the atrophic upper jaw.

In the years 1992–2001, Sailer, together with his colleagues Edit Kolb and Franz Weber, published several papers on the production and application of bone morphogenetic proteins. These proteins are intended to save the patient from having to remove his own bone when reconstructing the jaw and face area.

Sailer has been dealing with the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome since the 1990s . He developed the bimaxillary rotation advancement operation for permanent expansion of the upper airways.

Sailer and his team were among the first to develop absorbable osteosynthesis materials. The osteosynthesis material consisting of resorbable lactic acid material is used for the fixation of bone fractures as well as for the fixation of bones after orthopedic surgery on the skull and on the upper and lower jaw. The developed material can be bent both when cold and shaped when heated. Since it dissolves by itself after programmable times, no removal in a second operation is necessary, as is the case with osteosynthesis with metal material.

In studies of human physiognomy, Sailer put forward the theory that a new ideal of beauty had established itself in the 1930s and 1940s, namely the face that had grown forward, which he called "Anteface", in his even more extreme training, "Hyperanteface" . This special facial growth is now z. This can be proven , for example, in the case of top models, actors and winners of beauty contests .

Cleft-Children International Foundation

In 2000, Sailer founded the “Cleft-Children International” (CCI) foundation. The foundation runs centers in which children with cleft lip and palate can be operated on free of charge. The focus of the aid is in India, where a cleft center (partner clinic) is maintained in Mangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai (Madras), Mumbai (Bombay) and Kolkata (Calcutta). There is also a cleft center in Lahore, Pakistan as well as in Bethlehem, Palestine and Kitale, Kenya. In 2009 a school for cleft children was founded in Hyderabad.

In 2005 and 2008, two funding organizations were founded in Germany to support the work of the CCI: the Cleft-Kinder-Hilfe, Professor-Hermann-Sailer-Stiftung in Hanover and the Cleft-Kinder-Hilfe, Professor-Hermann-Sailer- Foundation in Bielefeld.
