Hermann Franz (Manager)

Hermann Franz (born November 27, 1928 in Gelsenkirchen ; † October 8, 2016 in Erlangen ) was a German engineer, chairman of the supervisory board of Siemens AG and an honorary citizen of Erlangen.

Life

Hermann Franz, son of Julius Franz († 1933) and his wife Rosa († 1981), trained as an electrician in a mine in Gelsenkirchen. From 1951 to 1957 he studied electrical engineering at the Technical University of Karlsruhe and was a member of the Corps Franconia Karlsruhe from the first semester . During his studies he already worked as a student trainee in an engineering office . His professional career began in 1957 as a sales engineer at the Essen branch of Siemens-Schuckertwerke , and in 1968 he was transferred to the chemistry department in Erlangen . A year later he was promoted to head of the mining department . In 1972 he took over the management of the chemistry and industrial turbines department, and in 1973 he became head of the primary industry .

In 1978, Franz received the post of head of the Siemens companies in Iran . In 1979 he was appointed head of the central administration abroad; In 1980 he was appointed to the Executive Board of Siemens AG . From 1985 on he was responsible for the installation and automotive technology division in Erlangen. In addition, Franz took over the management of the corporate planning and development central department in 1988 and was thus responsible for the reorganization of Siemens AG. From 1989 he was a member of the central board. From 1993 to 1999 he was chairman of the company's supervisory board . In March 1994 he retired from the Siemens executive board. Previously, Franz u. a. also chairman of the supervisory board of Siemens-Nixdorf Informationssysteme AG and was replaced in this function by Hans Baur in 1993 .

Franz held the honorary chairmanship of the Nuremberg Region Board of Trustees from 1996 to 1999 . Later he was chairman of the scientific-technical advisory board of the Bavarian state government , the scientific advisory board of the Bavarian Research Foundation and the board of trustees of the Bavarian Elite Academy , member of the university council of the University of Augsburg and chairman of the board of the Erlangen cultural foundation .

From 1993 to 1999 he was the commissioner of the Carl Zeiss Foundation , owner of the companies Carl Zeiss AG and Schott AG .
