Hermann Fuwechsel

Hermann Traugott Louis Fuechsel , also Füchsel or Fuchsel (* August 1833 in Braunschweig , Duchy of Braunschweig , † September 30, 1915 in New York City ), was a German-American landscape painter and lithographer from the Düsseldorf School and the Hudson River School .

Fuwechsel received his first painting lessons from Heinrich Brandes in Braunschweig. In the 1850s he studied in Düsseldorf . He is tangible there as a private student of Carl Friedrich Lessing . In the years 1857/1858 he belonged to the Düsseldorf artists' association Malkasten . During this time, Fuwechsel got to know the painters Albert Bierstadt , Worthington Whittredge and Emanuel Leutze . In 1858 he moved to New York City, where he became a member of the Artists' Fund Society, and opened a studio at 839 Broadway . In 1860 he began to participate in exhibitions at the Boston Athenæum and the American Art Union . From 1861 to 1900 he exhibited frequently at the National Academy of Design , as well as the Brooklyn Art Association. In 1882 Fuwechsel moved his studio to the Tenth Street Studio Building, which he kept until his death.

In Fuechel's painterly oeuvre, which is represented in the collections of the Hudson River Museum, the Walker Art Center , the Wadsworth Atheneum , the New-York Historical Society, and the Staten Island Museum , the emphasis is on mountain and water landscapes, which he prefers from from elevated points of view and completed in the studio. In the United States he painted the Hudson River , the White Mountains , Lake George and the Catskills and Adirondacks . As a lithographer, Fuechsel collaborated with the printer and publisher Louis Prang and also reproduced the landscapes of other painters, including Bierstadts. He became one of the most published artists in the United States.
