Hermann Josephson

Hermann Carl Eduard Josephson (born August 30, 1864 in Barmen ; † December 2, 1949 in Detmold ) was a German Protestant pastor , editor and writer .

Life

Josephson was a son of pastor Carl Ludwig Josephson (1811–1888) and his wife Anna Countess von der Schulenburg (1827–1900/01), a daughter of the Prussian general Hermann von der Schulenburg . His uncle Ludwig Josephson was also a pastor. The grandfather Carl Aron Josephson (1773-1829) converted from Judaism to Christianity in 1805.

Josephson graduated from high school in Barmen in 1882 and then studied Protestant theology in Halle, Greifswald, Berlin and Bonn. After the first exam in 1886 he became assistant preacher in Hamm . In 1887 he was in Bielefeld ordained . He took up his first pastor's position in Beverungen in 1888 , but moved to Hamm the next year. In 1895 he became pastor at the Pauluskirche in Bielefeld, in 1899 pastor primarius at the Liebfrauenkirche in Bremen . From 1905 he worked as a pastor in Klein Oschersleben . His last official position was that of the superintendent and first cathedral preacher at Hallesches Dom . In 1920 he retired, but in 1922/23 he was still a pastor in Schötmar and 1942–1944 in Schlangen .

From 1888 Josephson was first married to Bertha Josephson geb. Cremer (1861–1906) married, who wrote edifying stories under the pseudonym Bertha Mercator . The marriage resulted in four daughters. His second marriage was in 1907 with Margarete Japing from Vienna (1885–1954), the third in 1922 with Hildegard Großjohann from Detmold.

Josephson published some of his own sermons and edifying reflections. In particular, his writings on the moral support of soldiers fighting in World War I were distributed in large numbers. In addition, he published collections of sermons and stories.
