Ernst Hermann Ottiliae (born February 16, 1821 in Eisleben , † August 1, 1904 in Breslau ) was a Prussian mining captain .

Ottiliae was born in Eisleben in 1821 as the son of Ernst Ottiliae (1775-1851). His father was a smelter and director of the upper smelter of the Mansfeld copper-slate-building union.

Ottiliae attended elementary school in Eisleben and then the grammar school, which he graduated from high school in 1840. He began his mining activity in the same year as a mining enthusiast. From May 3, 1840, he carried out the first underground layers of the probationary year in the copper slate districts belonging to Eisleben . He then attended the Eisleben mountain school until 1843 (matriculation no. 270). As usual in the mountain school , he worked two days a week underground in copper slate mining and completed internships at the Wettiner and Löbejun hard coal mines . After completing his mountain school days, he studied in Berlin and Halle. During his studies he completed further internships in the Kanndorfer Revier, in Ilsenburg and Dürrenberg . In May 1847 he passed the Bergrefendar exam in Halle on the subject: "Start of copper slate mining in Alvensleben ." In the same year he wrote the work Brief description of the most interesting improvements that have been carried out in recent times at the Graflichen-Wernigerödische ironworks in Ilsenburg, together with special consideration of the local Hohofen process .

On August 5, 1848, Ottiliae got a job as a mountain trainee at the Halberstadt mining office . There he rose in 1850 first to the senior driver and on January 1, 1853 to the mountain master . On April 28, 1854 he passed the assessor examination in Berlin and was appointed mountain assessor on May 13 .

In 1856 he wrote the manuscript The Occurrence of Copper Slate and the same accompanying layers near Alvensleben, Emden, Hundisburg etc.

On August 6, 1860, he was transferred to the Eisleber Mining Office as deputy or acting director, appointed to Oberbergrat on October 4, 1861 and a member of the Halle Upper Mining Office as Technical Councilor .

From January 1, 1867, Ottiliae briefly went to Kassel as chairman of the mining and salt works directorate and was appointed to the mining and forestry office in Clausthal that same year . Here he worked under Mining Captain von Linsingen on the reorganization of the mining administration in the former Kingdom of Hanover . Ottiliae received an official apartment in the Clausthaler Amtshaus, which he initially had to share with von Linsingen.

When the Clausthal Mining Authority was established in 1868, he was appointed Mining Captain and Chief Mining Authority Director on February 3, 1868. On August 5, 1878, he was transferred to the Wroclaw Mining Authority with the same rank and title. In 1890, Ottiliae celebrated its 50th anniversary as a miner. A year later, on June 10, 1891, he was retired at his own request. On the occasion of his retirement from the civil service, he was awarded the title of Real Secret Upper Mountain Council. Ottiliae died at the age of eighty-three on August 1, 1904 in Breslau.

Little is known about his family, only a daughter Doris was mentioned, who married the mine director Hugo Koch , who came from an old Harz miners family .

Services

Ottiliae reorganized the mine administration in the Prussian Kingdom of Hanover since 1866 according to the Prussian model. During his tenure, the central shaft of Clausthal mines, named after him was Ottiliae shaft sunk .

Awards
