Hermann Rudolf Schaum (also Rudolph ; born April 29, 1819 in Glauchau , † September 15, 1865 in Bonn ) was a German entomologist , doctor and university professor .

Life

Foam was already five years old orphan . He was then accepted by his uncle, the entomologist Ernst Friedrich Germar in Halle. There he attended the Pädagogium Halle with very good success . He then went to Leipzig University in 1836 . He continued his medical studies at the Berlin University . In 1838 and 1839 he gained experience and studied at the clinics in Paris and Vienna . On his return he was present at the universities of Halle and Leipzig and passed all the necessary exams between 1841 and 1844 to be allowed to practice medicine. In 1841 he was at the University of Halle for Dr. med. PhD .

Schaum settled in Stettin in 1845 as a general practitioner . There he met the entomologist Carl August Dohrn , who supported Schaum's research efforts, which he had already started under the influence of his uncle during his time in Halle. Schaum also became a spa doctor in Heringsdorf in 1846 , but gave up his practice again in 1847 after he was able to build up financial reserves and traveled to Egypt , England and North America .

After his return in 1849, Schaum turned back to the University of Berlin, where he was initially awarded a Dr. phil. received his doctorate. In 1851 he completed his habilitation in entomology and became a private lecturer . In 1857 he was appointed associate professor at the university. He died of a stroke in Bonn in 1865 .

He was a member of the Academy of Charitable Sciences in Erfurt . His library and collections went as Bibliotheca Schaumiana to the Berlin State Library .

Publications (selection)

Foam's lively publication activity was mainly limited to journal articles. He published in German, especially in the Berlin Entomolgische Zeitschrift , for which he was active from the beginning, also in English (e.g. in the Journal of Entomology ) and in French (more often in the Annales de la Société Entomologique de France ). The following works were also published:

  • Symbolae ad monographiam scydmaenorum insectorum generis: dissertatio inauguralis medica , Schimmelpfennig, Halle 1841.
  • Natural history of the insects of Germany , Volume 1 in several deliveries, Nicolai, Berlin 1856-1860.
