Hermann von Loewenich (born October 26, 1931 in Nuremberg ; † December 18, 2008 there ) was regional bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria , the third largest church of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) , from 1994 to 1999 .

Life

Loewenich, son of a military pastor who died in Stalingrad , studied theology in Erlangen , Tübingen and Heidelberg . After completing his studies, he became the study inspector at the Predigerseminar Nürnberg , 1962 parish priest in Nürnberg-St. Egidien . For seven years, von Loewenich also worked as a student pastor in Nuremberg and in 1969 took up his first management position as dean in Kulmbach , and in 1976 he became dean of his hometown Nuremberg. From 1985 to 1994 he was district dean in the church district of Nuremberg .

Loewenich was a co-founder of the "Evangelical Renewal Working Group" (1967) and as the spokesman for the "Open Church" working group (1985), a representative of a progressive course of the Bavarian regional church. B. for the ordination of women . On April 18, 1994 he was elected regional bishop. He named ecumenism as the focal points of his work , his advocacy of equality for women in the church and his commitment to promoting an evangelical profile in the state and society. Among other things, von Loewenich advocated the humane handling of the right of asylum and repeatedly went on a course of confrontation with the Bavarian state government. He also made significant progress in coming to terms with the history of the regional church during National Socialism.

Hermann von Loewenich died in Nuremberg in 2008. He was married and had two children.
