Hermsdorf was mentioned in 1350 as "Hermansdorf". From 1551 the manor Ringethal is documented as the landlord of the place. Hermsdorf thus belonged together with the neighboring towns of Ringethal and Falkenhain to the lordship of Ringethal , which represented an exclave belonging to the Freiberg district office , which was largely surrounded by the offices of Rochlitz and Nossen .

In 1832, the three places of the Ringethal rule were separated from the Freiberg district office and placed under the Frankenberg-Sachsenburg office. The offices were dissolved during the administrative reforms carried out in the Kingdom of Saxony in the 19th century . As a result, Hermsdorf came under the administration of the Mittweida court office in 1856 and in 1875 under the newly established Rochlitz administration .

As a result of the second district reform in the GDR in 1952, Hermsdorf was incorporated into the Hainichen district in the Chemnitz district (renamed the Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ), which was continued as the Saxon district of Hainichen from 1990 onwards . With the administrative reform that took place in 1994, Hermsdorf was incorporated into the Rossau municipality on January 1, 1994 and allocated to the newly formed Mittweida district. Since 2008, the community of Rossau and its districts have been part of the newly formed district of central Saxony.
