action
A group of military cadets survived a plane crash along with the seriously injured pilot Captain Benson. The group arrives on an uninhabited island by life raft . The next morning the boys explore the island and one of them finds a lake to drink from. An overweight boy with glasses, whom others only call Piggie, finds a sea shell in the sea, which the boy Ralph uses as a trumpet to call everyone together. By then, some had been collecting fruit and others had discovered a wild pig on the island. When they are all together, a leader is elected: Although Jack is the oldest, Ralph held the rank of Colonel at the academy and is therefore elected to lead the group. First the boys set up a camp. With the help of Piggie's glasses they light a fire on a hill on the island. Different groups should take turns and take care that the fire does not go out.
At the campfire, Jack tells the other boys scary stories and creates fear. Rumor has it that Jack was arrested for driving without a license and taken to the military academy for rehabilitation. Some time later, Jack and other boys formed a group of hunters who wanted to catch the pig. They practice on a chameleon that the quiet Simon has caught and tamed. Simon is taken aback. However, he also has another problem: the delirious pilot only trusts him and is afraid of the other boys. Simon is posted to guard the pilot who once escaped from the boys' camp into the jungle. When all the boys are asleep, the pilot moves away from the camp and the children later only find his clothes.
One day Jack is hunting the pig with his hunters. Meanwhile, a helicopter appears on the horizon. Ralph and his colleagues try in vain to draw attention to themselves. To make matters worse, the fire that Jack was supposed to watch out for has gone out. Jack reacts irritably to the allegations from Ralph and Piggie: He forms his own gang and moves with them to another part of the island. Some time later, on a pig hunt, one of Jack's companions leaves and follows another animal to a cave, where he is attacked by a creature. Jack and the others also hear the "monster" in the cave, which everyone avoids from now on. One of Jack's colleagues warns Ralph's people about the monster. However, solidarity does not last long; so Jack steals a knife from Ralph's warehouse after Ralph refused to leave it to him. One of Piggie's glasses broke during the robbery. Jack and his men carve spears with a knife and spear a pig's head on them, which is intended as an offering for the monster. The rest of the pig is grilled in the evening. The festival ends with an initially harmless game in which one of the boys plays a pig that the other boys have to kill with their spears. Meanwhile, Simon is out and about in the forest and is looking for the cave. He has a light stick with him and discovers the pilot's body in the cave. He rushes back to camp, but is mistaken for the monster with the glow stick in hand. The boys, ecstatic by the game, pounce on him and stab him in a rage. Ralph is shaken the next day that Simon was murdered, but Piggie describes the incident as an accident.
Because his own fire has gone out, Jack and his colleagues raid Ralph's camp and steal Piggie's glasses. He is devastated and goes to Jack's camp with Ralph. There is a duel between Ralph and Jack, which Piggie tries to resolve with an appeal to reason. As he talks, Jack's men loosen a boulder on the cliff that kills Piggie. Ralph is pelted with stones by the others and chased away. He learns from the twins Erik and Sam that they want to kill him as the remaining enemy. He replies that in the end his death is also her fault. In the morning his sleeping place is shrouded in fire smoke. Jack and his people want to "smoke out" him and a hunt begins on Ralph, who is running for his life. Sam and Eric cover him up when they see him. Ralph eventually rushes to the beach, where he trips and lands in front of a marine. Soldiers have landed on the island and the man is amazed when he sees Jack and his fellow soldiers in war paint and with raised spears ("I don't understand! What's that about, boys?"). As Jack and the others slowly wake up from their intoxication, Ralph bursts into tears.

criticism
The film-dienst criticized the fact that Herr der Flies “largely reduced the multi-layered material to its plot contours and flat theses. Also unsatisfactory in terms of optical resolution, so that the chance for a demanding genre film is wasted. ”In contrast to the version from 1963, Cinema described the film as“ a less symbolic remake ”.
