Herz-Jesu-Kirche (Wurzen)
The Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Wurzen is a Catholic church that was built at the end of the 19th century on what was then the eastern outskirts of Wurzen. It is the parish church of the Herz-Jesu-Gemeinde Wurzen in the diocese of Dresden-Meißen . The building is a listed building .
Location and shape
The church is located at the fork in the road between Torgauer Straße and Roitzscher Weg. The old trade route Via Regia ran here , along which the revived ecumenical “ Jacob's Pilgrimage ” is used. There was once an old place of execution in Wurzens, the "Hohe Rad". Behind the church is the the Catholic Caritas Association operated nursing home "St. Hedwig ”with the St. Hedwig Chapel.
The structure of the church, built in neo-Romanesque style, is modeled on a medieval cross basilica with nave and transept . The nave has four bays , with the top windows of each bay forming a group of three. A narrower choir with a semicircular apse adjoins the crossing . The square tower with the building entrance on the west side has four floors and an octagonal pointed helmet , which is crowned by a cross. Tower, choir and transept gable are decorated with arched friezes.
In the apse with stained glass windows, behind the cafeteria, there is a large crucifix, flanked by statues of Mary and the disciple John .
history
While there were only 11 Catholics in Wurzen in 1834, after 1890 the Catholic community had grown significantly, so that a church was indicated. The foundation stone for the Herz-Jesu-Kirche was laid on May 4th, 1899. It could already be used on the 1st Advent of the same year. The construction was significantly supported by the Catholic Baron von Schönberg auf Thammenhain . The consecration of the church by Bishop Aloys Schäfer did not take place until Ascension Day 1910.
One of the stained glass windows in the apse was donated by the city of Wurzen. The organ was installed in 1939. One year before its 100th anniversary, the complex renovation of the church was completed.
The two previously independent Catholic parishes of Wurzen and Grimma are merging. On May 5, 2019, the new parish of St. Francis was founded in the presence of Bishop Heinrich Timmerevers . The seat of the united parish will be Wurzen and the Herz-Jesu-Kirche will be its parish church .
Bells
The first bell of the church was melted down in 1917 for purposes of the First World War in 1917. It was replaced by three steel bells in 1924. We are currently working on the renovation of the bells.
organ
The Jehmlich organ from 1939 has two manuals plus pedal , 16 registers with a total of 984 pipes , 39 of which are visible from the front. In 2018, the organ was extensively renovated and put back into operation on August 15, 2018 after a six-week renovation period.
