The Herz-Jesu-Kirche in the Bad Godesberg district of Godesberg-Villenviertel is a church building that was built in several phases from 1906 to the end of the 1950s. The church at Beethovenallee 38 is used by the Catholic parish of St. Andreas and Evergislus and thus belongs to the Archdiocese of Cologne . The parish church is a listed building.

history

The Catholics of the villa district had to attend the service in the neighboring Marienkirche or Rüngsdorfer Andreaskirche until their own church was built . Around the turn of the 20th century, the construction of a Catholic church in the villa district was suggested by the Plittersdorf pastor Brüll and later by his successor, Ludwig Leonards. The Vicar General gave the order to prepare for a church building in the 1904th

In 1905, with the approval of the archbishop, the community was able to purchase a building plot on today 's Beethovenallee at a price of 80,000 marks . Under the diocesan master builder Heinrich Renard , a small neo-Gothic church building was built for 18,000 marks. The foundation stone was laid on September 24, 1905, the consecration took place on October 8, 1906 by the Mehlemer dean Hütten.

The new church was initially run as the rectorate of the Marien-Gemeinde. In March 1908, the auxiliary organ that had been rented up until then was replaced by a donation-financed Klais organ. A second bell was also purchased. On July 24, 1914, the archbishopric recognized the elevation of the parish led by Pastor Hugo Liedmann to an autonomous parish.

Expansion in 1936

Due to the growth of the Catholic community in the villa district, an extension of the old church building became necessary in the 1930s. From 1936 onwards, the building was significantly expanded and converted under the direction of the Bonn architect Jakob Stumpf. The original church was integrated into the new building as a transept . The architect gave the building a character reminiscent of the Bauhaus style; the construction work led the concentration to the inner center of the church space; the choir is now facing north (previously east) and is flanked by two side chapels. In addition to the asymmetrical transept, there are three longitudinal aisles. The entrance, which was moved to the south side, was given a massive block-like tower with a vestibule and a portal. This cubist -looking tower gives the building an interesting accent that matches the villa district. The side windows in the new building and the rosette on the gallery consist of geometric and ornamental compositions of unknown origin made of antique glass and lead . The interior of the church also looks matter-of-fact with its clear lines. The landmark is a monumental crucifix suspended from the high altar . The renovation costs were estimated at 46,000 Reichsmarks.

Changes from 1947

Under the architect Peter Rieck, architectural corrections were made from 1947 to compensate for the overall picture, which at the time was perceived as too heterogeneous. The architect made particular efforts to harmonize the interior of the church. In addition, darkly contrasting interior structures (e.g. the capitals and vault ribs ) were harmonized with the restrained, light-accentuated painting of the walls. A few new windows were also created, also with geometrical-ornamental compositions.

Since the 1960s

At the patronage festival on June 26, 1960, the artist Meta Maria Driever presented the church with a number of works of art: Stations of the Cross and figures of saints - including a colored sculpture of Mary, a wooden statue of the young Joseph with baby Jesus and a wooden sculpture of Saint Anthony. In 1962, donations were used to make a mechanical slide organ with three manuals and 29 registers from the Ludwigsburg organ building company EF Walcker & Cie. can be acquired. At the inauguration on the third Sunday of Advent in 1962, it was played by cathedral organist Josef Zimmermann . Under the parish priest Edmund Bähr, who worked in the residential area until 1990, Herz Jesu received its youth and parish home, a parsonage, a library and a kindergarten. In 1973 the sculptor Sepp Hürten was hired for a further artistic design.

On the occasion of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the church, Cardinal Joachim Meisner from Cologne came to the villa district in September 2006. The Sacred Heart statue was also restored for the anniversary. Since 2005, the freely hanging crucifix in the chancel has been wrapped in various materials for a few weeks once a year. Community member Fee Barden looks after these installations; strips of fabric, aluminum foil or bandages are used. In some cases, other parts of the church are also included in the art campaign.

Sacred Heart Monastery

A Sacred Heart Monastery initiated and supported by the Rheinviertel community foundation founded in 2005 was consecrated on September 16, 2006 on the occasion of the pontifical office for the 100th anniversary of the parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The monastery is located in the former parish center of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Hensstrasse near the church . With initially five women religious from India, who belong to the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of Mary , the monastery is dedicated to the care of the elderly and hospice work in the community.
