The Church of the Heart of Jesus is the Roman Catholic parish church of Hausen am Albis in the canton of Zurich . It is located at Bifangstrasse 4 south of the town center. The parish belonging to it is responsible for the villages of Hausen, Kappel am Albis and Rifferswil .

history

History and naming

The medieval church in Hausen was consecrated to St. Ulrich and was first mentioned in a document in 1250. This church had a Romanesque semicircular choir . This first church was replaced by a new Gothic building between 1491 and 1494 . St. Ulrich was a branch church of St. Martin zu Baar ZG and was incorporated into the Kappel monastery with Baar in 1407 . In 1495 the residents of Hausen wanted an independent parish, which could not be accomplished until 1527 after the Reformation . When the Reformation was carried out in Zurich from 1523, Catholic worship was also forbidden in the Zurich subject areas, which is why the St. Ulrich Church continued to be used as a Reformed Church from then on. Its first pastor was a reformed monk from the Kappel monastery in 1527.

The Edict of Tolerance of 1807 allowed the Catholic rite again for the first time, but locally limited to the city of Zurich . The freedom of residence and freedom of belief in the Helvetic Republic and, from 1848, in the Swiss federal state allowed Catholic workers and their families to move to the Reformed canton of Zurich. The industrialization left in the area of Affoltern am Albis different companies emerge, so that the region was attractive to workers. In 1860 the Affoltern district had 322 Catholics, in 1888 there were 1013. These figures make it clear that the establishment of a Catholic parish in the Knonau office seemed to be a priority. The domestic mission , which financially supported the founding of Catholic parishes in the reformed cantons, enabled the opening of a mission station in Affoltern on May 30, 1887, from which the parish of St. Josef later emerged, also for Hausen and the surrounding towns was responsible.

Development and construction history

From 1897 to 1910, church services were held in Rifferswil in a tavern for the 300 or so Catholics in the Oberamt by Capuchins from Zug and religious instruction was given to the children. In 1908 the Catholics in Hausen were able to buy a building site for a church. When the Sacred Heart Chapel was consecrated in Hausen on November 6, 1910 , pastoral care in the Oberamt was transferred from Rifferswil to Hausen. This church could only be built with the financial support of the Domestic Mission . In 1922 Hausen was made an independent parish and separated from Affoltern. When the number of Catholics in the parish grew steadily in the second half of the 20th century, the new building of the church including the parish center became a priority. In 1971 the area of the Vollenweider nursery was acquired for the construction of today's church in Bifang . In the years 1976–1977, today's Church of the Heart of Jesus, including the parish center and parsonage, was built on this site according to the plans of the architect Albert Müller, Zug. On October 9, 1977, the church was consecrated by the Bishop of Chur , Johannes Vonderach .

The parish Herz Jesu Hausen a. Together with the parish of St. Burkard Mettmenstetten, A. forms the parish of Hausen-Mettmenstetten. With its 3,740 members (as of 2017), this is one of the medium-sized Catholic parishes in the canton of Zurich.

Building description

Bell tower

Church tower and exterior

The Church of the Heart of Jesus is located on the southern edge of the village center of Hausen. The topographical location and the desire not to build a dominant church significantly determined the external shape of the church, including the parish center. Two square building cubes with gable roofs running in opposite directions contain the church with the bell tower only slightly raised from the church roof and the rectory. There is a forecourt between the two buildings, through which the visitor enters the church. This forecourt is protected by a wall from the view of passers-by on Bifangstrasse and the higher Ebertswilerstrasse . If necessary, liturgical acts can also be performed in this forecourt . That this building complex is a church can only be recognized by the isosceles cross on the lower church tower. The consecration of the church to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is indicated to the visitor through a stained glass window, which is attached to the Bifangstrasse in front of the forecourt of the church and symbolizes a heart. Only a few building materials were used for the construction of the church: plastered wall surfaces painted in a brick tone and eaves, lintels and windows clad with copper characterize the facades. The roofs are with Eternit slate covered and covered inside with Fastäfer.

The church tower has a three-part bell. The older bell is the Marienglocke, cast by Giesser Hans I. Füssli in 1499, which hung in the Reformed Church until 1905. It should have been melted down together with the other old bells of the reformed church in the bell foundry H. Rüetschi , Aarau for a new bell. The silk manufacturer Zürrer von Hausen saved the bell by buying it back from the bell foundry on December 18, 1905 and giving it to the Catholics for the Catholic Church of Hausen, which was still to be built. The younger bells were cast in Aarau on July 15, 1977, consecrated on September 10, 1977 and then wound up in the tower together with the medieval bell of Mary.

Interior and artistic equipment

Interior view with organ

The foyer of the church serves as a meeting point for smaller groups or before and after the service for visitors. The walls from the foyer to the church interior can be opened so that the foyer can also serve as an extension of the church. The church interior is pentagonal and gathers the faithful in a semicircle around the altar area. This arrangement clarifies the requirements of the liturgy constitution of the Second Vatican Council , which emphasized the community of pastors and congregations. The organ is located on the eastern rear wall of the church. Ground-level windows open to the northeast and southwest and allow daylight to enter the church. There are four glass windows above the altar area, which contain glass stones in yellow, red and blue tones in an abstract arrangement and designed by Dea Murk. In front of the altar wall, which closes the altar area at right angles, there are ambo and altar , tabernacle and baptismal font . They were designed from solid oak by the artist Ursula Seleger-Hansen, Hausen. The baptismal font and the foundation stone at the entrance to the church come from Josef von Wyl, Stallikon.
