Hieronymus Mencel (also: Menzel, Mencelius, Mentzel ; * February 22, 1517 in Schweidnitz ; † February 25, 1590 in Eisleben ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Life

The son of the cloth maker Hans Mencel and his wife Anna (née Schmidichen) attended school in his hometown from the age of seven. Due to adverse circumstances, his training there was repeatedly interrupted. Despite the limited financial circumstances of his parents, he was able to attend school in Goldberg in 1535 with the intercession of a nobleman , where he developed splendidly under the direction of Valentin Friedland . There he also took on teaching duties and was able to acquire the financial means to enroll at the University of Wittenberg in the summer semester of 1540. There he switched to studying theology and attended the lectures of Martin Luther , Philipp Melanchthon , Justus Jonas the Elder , Johannes Bugenhagen and Caspar Cruciger the Elder .

In 1541 he moved to the University of Leipzig . In Leipzig he was accepted in the house of Bernhard von Ziegler , where eight young nobles were assigned to him for training. At the same time he attended the lectures of Caspar Borner and Joachim Camerarius the Elder . It was the latter who got him a school teacher position in Eisleben on August 5, 1542. In this way he was able to create the financial basis to acquire the academic degree of Magister of the Seven Liberal Arts at the University of Wittenberg on February 24, 1551 . As a result, he returned to Eisleben and was appointed vice principal of the school.

On March 17, 1553, he was appointed pastor by Count Hans Albrecht von Mansfeld to the St. Nikolaikirche in Eisleben, and with the departure of Erasmus Sarcerius , he was appointed general superintendent by the Counts of Mansfeld on May 16, 1560 . After he was confirmed in this office on May 29th, he took over the associated pastoral office at St. Andrew's Church, visited the county five times, supervised his areas of responsibility and participated in five theological synods. Above all, he appeared as an opponent of the Gnesiolutherans , especially with Cyriakus Spangenberg . His oeuvre includes numerous sermons, postils, consolation and polemical works. His body was buried on March 1, 1590 in St. Andrew's Church.

Mencel was married three times. His first marriage was on May 4, 1544 with Helene Beichling († May 20, 1568). After his first wife died, he went to Anna Fahr (Faber † October 8, 1577) on September 5, 1569 a second marriage. When this woman also died, on February 26, 1579, he married Catharina Schütze, the widow of pastor Christian Coelius. However, his marriages were childless.
