Hieronymus Pasmann

Hieronymus Pasmann (also Paßmann ; * April 10, 1641 in Hamburg ; † April 21, 1716 ibid) was a German Evangelical Lutheran clergyman and educator .

Life

Pasmann was born in Hamburg as the son of the tin beater Michael Pasmann. After his school education he studied theology at the University of Giessen and the University of Jena and completed his studies in Jena in 1663 as a master's degree . He returned to Hamburg and was accepted as a candidate for the ministry . On June 9, 1678 he was elected the third deacon (preacher) at the main church of St. Michaelis and on July 9, 1678 he was introduced to his office. He held this office until his death in 1716.

Create

The Sankt Michaelis parish had only been elevated to the fifth Hamburg parish a few months before Pasmann took office and had not yet been able to do anything for the education of the poor in the Neustadt. So Pasmann decided to build a school for the poor himself. As an example he served in since 1612 Saint George existing Knackenrüggische charity school . The Hamburg mayor Heinrich Meurer approved Pasmann's project. So from January 1682 donations were collected for the new school for the poor (from which probably the Rumbaumsche school opened in 1690 emerged). In addition to Pasmann, the preacher at the main church of Sankt Petri , Caspar Theodor Fürsen (1646–1684), took on the collection. Since Pasmann publicly expressed his displeasure with the distribution of poor money in his parish, he was suspended from his position as preacher on September 15, 1682, but was restituted on November 22, 1682. The suspension did not harm his plan, but rather led to an accumulation of donations for the school for the poor. On March 30, 1683, the establishment of the school for the poor was approved by the council . The board consisted of Pasmann (after whom the school was named), his friend Fürsen, as well as two council members and two citizens. The school for the poor was opened with an inauguration sermon and initially moved into a rented house. The Paßmann school for the poor was built in 1684. In 1684 500 students attended this school. The school served to give poor children free schooling and has been supported by many Hamburg theologians and educators on a voluntary basis since it was founded.

family

Pasmann was married twice: on August 19, 1678, he married Christina Witte, who died on January 23, 1706. His second marriage was on September 30, 1709 with Anna Catharina Vogelbusch. She died on June 1, 1741.
