Hieronymus Vietor (Binder, Böttcher, Büttner, * around 1480 in Liebenthal , Lower Silesia , † 1546 in Vienna ) was a printer and publisher who worked in Vienna and Cracow .

Life

Hieronymus Binder ( Böttcher , Büttner ), or Latinized also called Vietor , came from Liebenthal, which is why he also called himself Latinized Philovallis . From 1497 he studied at the Artistic Faculty of the Cracow Academy , where Andreas von Labischin was rector. In 1499 he received the Baccalauréat of the Liberal Arts. Presumably he then learned from Johann Haller , and from 1510 he began working as a Viennese book printer. At first he printed together with Hans Singriener until 1514 ; their first print was by Claudius Claudianus , and in 1511 they had Greek letters . The bookstore was located on the old meat market over the Nuns monastery St. Lawrence. From 1515 he printed alone - the friendship between him and Singriener remained. In 1516 Vietor owned a house in Weihenburggasse, which was also where his office (workshop) was located; but as early as 1517 he moved back to Cracow, to whose scholars and nobles he had always maintained lively relationships and where he now set up a large printing press . The Viennese office continued to exist and was run by his brother Benedict and, most recently, probably by his son Florian, of whom a print from 1531 is still preserved in the Viennese court library . With this year the activity of Vietor's Viennese shop ended.

Vietor died in 1546; his widow continued the operation of the Cracow printing press until 1551. Vietor mostly printed in Latin and Polish . His books are characterized by beautiful writing, correct printing, and good paper and woodcuts.
