Life

Hieronymus von Klebelsberg was the son of Christoph Leonhard von Klebelsberg, judge of Bruneck.

After completing high school in Innsbruck and Seitenstetten , he studied law in Innsbruck (1816–1818), Padua (1818–1822) and Graz . In 1822 he entered the judicial civil service. On June 27, 1824 he received his doctorate as Dr. jur. at the University of Padua . In 1833 he was a district judge in Ampezzo and in 1837 in Fügen .

Political activity

1838-1850 he was mayor of Innsbruck and until 1862 head of the Sparkasse. The Ferdinandeum Museum was built under his aegis as mayor . For many years he was chief rifleman at the main shooting range in Tyrol.

In 1838 he was a member of the state parliament ( Estates Congress ), from 1848 to 1847 a member of the Reichstag in Vienna and until its dissolution in Kremsier . Here he spoke out against the separation of Welschtirol and for the interests (discussion of the fundamental rights concerning religious freedom) of the Catholic Church.

In 1850 he became a regional judge in Rattenberg , and in 1853 he became a member of the state examination commission at the University of Innsbruck . In 1852 he withdrew from politics as an opponent of neo-absolutism. In 1858 he was appointed to the committee to advise on the code of civil procedure. In 1859 he was appointed higher regional judge. Emperor Franz Joseph I then awarded him the Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order . In 1848 and 1859 he was a member of the State Defense Committee.

In 1860 he worked on a new regional order for Tyrol. In 1861 he became city councilor in Innsbruck, then elected member of the state parliament and from March 31, 1861 governor of Tyrol. His early death (1862) ended this activity abruptly.

Hieronymus von Klebelsberg showed a moderately liberal attitude and could count on the great confidence of the Tyrolean population in him. He stood up for the preservation of the Tyrolean religious unity and rejected the national separation requests of the Trentino. He was considered a financial expert and dealt in detail with a tax form in Tyrol.
