Theodor Freiherr von Kathrein (born March 25, 1842 in Salurn , South Tyrol ; † October 1, 1916 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian politician (Conservative Party) and governor of the Crown Land of Tyrol from 1904 until his death.

biography

Theodor Kathrein was born in Salurn as the son of a teacher from the Upper Inn Valley and attended grammar school in Bozen and Trento . He then studied law at the University of Innsbruck . Since 1865 he was a member of the Catholic student union AV Austria Innsbruck . In 1878 he opened a lawyer (as it was then known for lawyer) his office in Hall in Tirol , where he in 1895 was elected mayor.

On January 22nd, 1884, Kathrein entered the Chamber of Deputies of the Reichsrat as a replacement for a resigned Tyrolean . From April 6 to October 26, 1897 (resignation), he was elected President of the House of Representatives. He resigned from the presidency at a time when there was heated argument in the House of Representatives, including over the rules of procedure: As a result, there were tumults, the security guard intervened and some members of the parliament were temporarily excluded. On November 28, 1897, the Imperial Council was adjourned by the Kaiser until further notice . Kathrein remained a member of the Reichsrat until 1907; he was a member of the house for five legislative periods or nine sessions.

Like hardly any other Tyrolean politician, he had an influence on Vienna's central bureaucracy and even on Emperor Franz Joseph . As a member of the state parliament since 1883 and Tyrolean governor from 1904 until his death, he unsuccessfully campaigned for the autonomy of Welschtirol and for a balance between the conservatives and the Christian Socialists.

In 1907 he was appointed as a non-nobleman by the emperor for life in the manor house of the Reichsrat . On January 22nd, 1910, on the occasion of the centenary in Tyrol, the emperor awarded him the baron status.

Kathrein died in Innsbruck on October 1st, 1916 during his tenure as governor during the First World War .
