Hildegard Franz was born in Tübingen and grew up in Ravensburg . After she was sent to the gypsy camp in Ravensburg in 1936 , she was examined there by the Racial Hygiene Research Center in 1937 . March 13, 1943 were 36 children, men and women picked up and on 15 March 1943 by the freight station Stuttgart in the newly established "from the camp gypsy camp Auschwitz " deported . At that time she was married and had three daughters between the ages of three years and seven months. She was registered there under the prisoner number Z 4734 and tattooed. Her daughters were also registered there according to other members of the Reinhardt family under the prisoner numbers Z 4739 to 4741. The children's death dates are not given, Hildegard Franz's onward journey is noted for April 15, 1944. On that day, two large groups of prisoners, 884 men and 473 women, were deported to the Buchenwald and Ravensbrück concentration camps .

On April 26, 1943, the household effects left in Ravensburg were put up for auction and the living space was released for reuse from May 1st.

Hildegard Franz was later used as a forced laborer in the armaments department in the Buchenwald concentration camp . They freed the Americans on a death march in Thuringia . Her husband was killed in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp .

After the war, she and five other women returned to Ravensburg. On the site of the former forced camp, there is now accommodation in the barracks of the camp, which was a social hotspot until well into the 1980s. In 1957 she received a one-time compensation of 150 marks for her persecution by the Nazi state as compensation for the deprivation of liberty of the children, not for their death. It was only in 2001 that she was able to receive a monthly victim pension.

After the civil rights movement gained strength, she gave many lectures, including to school classes, and received numerous honors. She received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for her commitment as a “tireless admonisher against forgetting and for the reconciliation of peoples”.

In 2003 and 2007 she gave speeches on the grounds of the former Buchenwald concentration camp at commemorative events of the International Camp Committee in Buchenwald concentration camp on the occasion of the respective anniversaries of the liberation. At the 2004 Katholikentag she had an interview with contemporary witnesses. In 2005, her fate was presented as part of an exhibition Les femmes oubliées de Buchenwald at the Jean Moulin Museum in Paris . In March 2013, on the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of the deportation of the Sinti from the Stuttgart region, their memoirs were read out in an ecumenical memorial service with the participation of Bishops Gebhard Fürst and Ulrich Fischer .

Hildegard Franz, who had also received numerous honors from the city of Ravensburg, died on May 7, 2013 at the age of 92 of pneumonia . She is buried in the city cemetery in Rottweil .
