The hinterland Museum in Schloss Biedenkopf , with its extensive collection Hinterländer costumes an important cultural monument in the Hessian hinterland and the only cultural history museum in the sponsorship of the Marburg-Biedenkopf district , which is regionally positioned across. In the Landgrave Castle of the climatic health resort of Biedenkopf , local cultural history from the past 900 years is shown on 1,000 square meters. The exhibition extends over all floors of the former hall building, the so-called Palas , and focuses on the history of traffic, industry, agriculture and handicrafts as well as traditional costumes, everyday life and living culture.

Foundation and early years

The history association for the district of Biedenkopf founded a so-called "antiquity museum" as a regional museum in the ground floor rooms of the Biedenkopfer castle with the opening date September 25, 1908. It was later referred to as the traditional costume museum and local history museum . The association was constituted in 1907 with 83 members and declared the "establishment of an antiquity and costume collection" in Biedenkopf Castle to be one of its goals. The foundation of the collection was laid with the private collection of around 250 objects belonging to the antique dealer and master chimney sweep Carl Pfeil I. Many of the objects he collected can still be seen in the museum today. A bronze bust was made in honor of the founder and can still be seen in the entrance area of the museum today. The first floor was also used as early as 1910 and Carl Pfeil I was appointed the first conservator; his son Carl Pfeil jun. followed him in this position.

The centerpiece of the exhibition has been the life-size figurines with the traditional costumes of the hinterland since the museum began . The variety of clothing is clearly visible in them. The museum achieved supra-regional importance primarily through this extensive inventory of traditional costumes. The regional and cultural history of the hinterland is presented in various departments.

Parts of the founding stock were lost through burglaries in 1920 and 1945.

In 1937, Biedenkopf Castle, which had previously been owned by the Free State of Prussia, was acquired by the Biedenkopf district for the symbolic purchase price of 500 Reichsmarks. “Administration, maintenance and design of the district's own castle complex including the local history museum” and “the promotion of cultural events at the castle” - these tasks were taken over by Schlossverein Biedenkopf e. V. as a private association.

Closure and redesign

In 1988 the castle had to be closed to visitors due to urgently needed renovation work (the roof structure threatened to collapse). In the following years, the building was renovated by the current owner, the Marburg-Biedenkopf district.

Since the museum's holdings had to be relocated to the Carlshütte near Buchenau during the renovation of the palace , they could be subjected to necessary restoration and inventory work during this time. Scientific support in the form of university project staff was necessary and welcome. The museum pieces could then - depending on the thematic concept - be made accessible to the public again on today's 1,000 m² exhibition space. The museum has around 11,400 inventoried objects; the total inventory is estimated at 30,000 parts.

The museum was didactically redesigned and reopened in April 1993. After the renovation, the interior of the castle was awarded the Hessian Monument Protection Prize in the same year .

After the reopening, work began on highlighting one item from the museum's extensive collection every month. This exhibit of the month is usually stored in the depot and cannot be shown permanently. With the highlighting of this monthly changing exhibit, thanks also go to the private donors, who often donate rare equipment from bygone times to the Hinterland Museum.

Route of work and industrial culture

In the Hinterland Museum Schloss Biedenkopf there has been a first anchor point of the newly designed route of the work and industrial culture of the district in addition to modern and media-presented exhibits on work and industrial history. The museum is a central point of this route.

Structure of the exhibition

Transport, Post and Industrial Development

In the entrance hall on the ground floor information is provided about the development of the transport and postal services in the hinterland. A stagecoach that ran between Biedenkopf and Battenberg until 1908 (manufactured in Biedenkopf in 1886) illustrates the difficult transport conditions through the hinterland; it could be converted into a wheel sled in winter.

Hand pressure syringes and extinguishing buckets document the history of fire fighting in the Biedenkopfer room. The region's industrial development, which was associated with the rise and fall of metallurgy, reached its peak in the 19th century. Products of the iron industry, which are supplemented by technical explanations of ore processing, provide insights into the historical development of metal extraction and processing.

The medieval castle kitchen with its huge smoke vent can also be viewed on the ground floor.

Border crossing festival

Border crossing room

The border crossing festival has been held in Biedenkopf every seven years since 1839 ; a 3-day event that has developed since 1693 from the necessary pacing and checking of the district boundary. The importance and history of the Biedenkopfer Grenzgang are illustrated and explained by numerous exhibits. Information on the use and importance of the forest for the city and its citizens complete this exhibition area on the upper floor of the palace building. The special exhibitions, which usually change every six months, also take place here. In addition, concerts, lectures and smaller theater performances can be attended there at irregular intervals.

Costume collection

Part of the museum's extensive collection of Hinterländer costumes is on display in the attic . Together with household items and pieces of furniture, the historical living and everyday culture is clearly shown here.

dialect

The "Plattschwätzkasde", which was set up next to the costume exhibition, is an innovation. Since August 2011, visitors have been able to access maps and other information on the distribution of the different dialects in the hinterland on a computer with an oversized touchscreen ; spoken dialect examples can be heard from CDs. Two of these devices were developed and built by an IT class at the Biedenkopf vocational schools . Another device is located in the regional museum in Gladenbach-Weidenhausen . The audio samples come from a joint project of the "Dialekt im Hinterland" association and the linguists from the Philipps University of Marburg with their professor Heinrich J. Dingeldein .

Textile crafts

Furthermore, you can find out about various textile crafts in the attic: the dyer, the cloth maker, the stocking maker, also the hat maker and the shoemaker are exhibited here along with their special tools.

art

A few early examples of medieval church art, such as Pietà groups from Biedenkopf and Gönnern (1440 and 1500) and works by modern painters (e.g. August F. Eberspächer , Karl Lenz , Halver and Einhoff) make the artistic value of the collection clear.

Building trades

The building trades - blacksmiths, locksmiths, rope makers, glaziers, painters, white binders, bricklayers, carpenters and joiners - have their place on the roof gallery. The freely visible roof beam construction is a rare document of the carpentry art of the 15th century. Not in the Palas, but at the entrance to the castle restaurant "Schlossterrasse", various techniques of scratch plaster and a clay compartment of a half-timbered structure are presented.

Special exhibitions (selection)

  • On the occasion of its centenary, the museum showed from June 20 to September 21, 2008 as an anniversary exhibition “Old handicrafts from the hinterland”.

The museum has a considerable collection of furniture and everyday objects that are evidence of the craftsmanship from the Hessian hinterland. In the 18th and 19th centuries, woodworking trades such as carpenters and joiners in particular created objects that were distinguished by their special quality. Since some of these master craftsmen from the hinterland are now known by name, we can refer to the Marburg architect and folklorist Karl Rumpf (1885–1968). He drew numerous objects from the hinterland, some of which are in the Biedenkopf Castle Hinterland Museum. As a traditionally oriented scientist, his attention was focused on the handcrafted, pre-industrial objects such as chests, tables, chairs, cupboards, but also items of daily use such as tools, kitchen and tableware made of ceramic or metal.

  • Special exhibition from June 30th to September 2nd, 2012 "Beer breweries on the upper Lahn"

The formerly diverse tradition of local breweries in the hinterland is the subject of this special exhibition in the Hinterland Museum Schloss Biedenkopf. The historical development of the breweries in the catchment area of the Lahn upstream above Gießen is shown since the early 19th century. The domestic brewing tradition is illustrated by the company history of more than 70 breweries as well as with numerous photos and cultural assets from private collections. A richly illustrated catalog will be published for the exhibition.
