History of origin

Leading actress Dafne Keen at Comic-Con 2019

His Dark Materials is a three-part book series published by Philip Pullman between 1995 and 2000. In 2007, New Line Cinema released the first book in the series under the title The Golden Compass, a film that was discontinued, so that the film rights were returned to Pullman. Finally, BBC One announced a television adaptation of His Dark Materials produced by Bad Wolf with New Line Cinema. It was originally thought that the eight-part adaptation would appear in 2017. However, this year Pullman said that the series is still in pre-production and that it is important to him that the adaptation stays close to his works. In September 2018 it was announced that HBO would join series production and be responsible for releasing the series outside of the UK.

On September 11, 2018, about a year before the first season was released, His Dark Materials was extended for a second season. On February 24, 2019, it was announced that the first season would be released in late 2019.

Tom Hooper was announced as director on March 8, 2018 . On the same day it was announced that the protagonist Lyra Belacqua will be played by Dafne Keen . The following month, Ruth Wilson and James McAvoy were cast as Lyra's parents, Marisa Coulter and Lord Asriel.

The first trailer for the series was released at San Diego Comic Con in July 2019.
