Euros Lyn ( pronunciation : [ ˈeɪrɒs ˈlɪn ]; * 1971 in Cardiff , Wales ) is a British film and television director and producer . He is particularly known for his contributions to the television series Doctor Who and Torchwood, as well as for his cinema debut, Y Llyfrgell . Lyn has already received several BAFTA and other notable film awards for his directorial work, and his works have received countless other international awards.

life and career

Lyn was born in the Welsh capital Cardiff in 1971 and grew up bilingual with Welsh as his mother tongue. His family moved to North Wales during his childhood and then back to Swansea on the south coast . There he first attended the Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera (prestigious secondary school) and then studied drama at the University of Manchester (then Victoria University). He switched to the camera early on.

Lyn began his career as a director for S4C television with Welsh language series such as Pam Fi Duw? , Iechyd Da and Y glass . This was followed by directing work for well-known English-language series such as Casualty and Cutting It .

He gained greater fame among international audiences as the director of several episodes and minisodes (including Music of the Spheres ) in the cult family series Doctor Who . He has received several awards for his contributions to the series, including a BAFTA and a Hugo Award . The episodes he directed are among the most popular episodes of the series, which continued in 2005, including Tödliche Stille (first appearance by River Song ), The Girl in the Fireplace and the final episodes of David Tennant as 10th Doctor ( The End of Time , Christmas and New Years Special 2009/10).

In 2007, he was director of the pilot episode of George Gently , a crime series of the BBC based on the Inspector Gently novels by Alan Hunter, aired on BBC One .

In 2008, Lyn directed the self-contained five-part miniseries Children of the Earth , which is the third season of the Doctor Who spin-off series Torchwood . This, too, was so well received by the audience that Lyn is also enjoying increasing international recognition and has been invited to conventions in Central Europe, North America and Oceania in connection with the series.

Another time he received the BAFTA Cymru award for best director for his contribution to the first season of the crime series Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in the leading roles. The series has also won several BAFTAS awards and awards from the RTS Royal Television Society for Best Series. He also directed Fifteen Million Merits , an episode of the Black Mirror anthology series ( Channel 4 ), which subsequently won an International Emmy for Best Drama Series. In 2013 he directed three episodes of the award-winning and internationally successful ITV crime drama series Broadchurch , again starring David Tennant and Olivia Colman . Of the series Last Tango in Halifax , which was also awarded the BAFTA , three episodes of the first and second season were on his account.

The crime series Happy Valley - In a Small Town , directed by Lyn, was first shown on BBC One in 2014 and won the BAFTA Award for Best Drama Series in 2015. He also directed episodes of Gracepoint (US remake of Broadchurch ; FOX USA), Cucumber ( Channel 4 ) and Marvel's Daredevil ( Netflix USA).

In 2015 Lyn received the Siân Phillips Award at the BAFTA Cymru Awards for his contributions to the film and television industry (see Lifetime Achievement Award). In the same year he directed the BBC three-part film Capital (adaptation of the novel of the same name by John Lanchester , 2012).

In 2016, Lyn's film debut followed, the Welsh-language feature film Y Llyfrgell ( The Library Suicides) with Ryland Teifi, Catrin Stewart, Dyfan Dwyfor and Sharon Haf Morgan in the leading roles. His directing was once again awarded a BAFTA. Lyn was also active as a producer for this film project for the first time .

Today he lives in Llangennith, Gower; Due to work, however, still in Cardiff and London. In 2015 he married his life partner Craig Hughes.
