Hjort Lorenzen
Hjort Lorenzen (also: Peter Hiort Lorenzen; * January 24, 1791 in Hadersleben ; † March 17, 1845 ) was a member of the Schleswig State Assembly in the 19th century and was one of the Danish-minded members there. His name is primarily associated with the demand for linguistic and cultural equality between the Danes in the Duchy of Schleswig at the time of the entire state.
Live and act
Lorenzen graduated from the old grammar school in Flensburg (in Danish: Flensborg lærde skole ) and in 1812 took over his grandfather's sugar refinery in Haderslev. He later founded his own trading company, which he operated until 1845. In September 1834 he was elected as a deputy for the town of Haderslev in the assembly of estates of the Duchy of Schleswig . A year later he was also accepted into the citizen college of his hometown.
Since 1830 Lorenzen has written several articles relating to political and socio-economic topics, which appeared in the correspondence sheet published in Kiel by the liberal and radical democratic journalist Theodor Olshausen . Lorenzen himself was liberally oriented. His liberal views were reinforced on a visit to England in 1837 when he learned about parliamentary practice there. As a deputy of the Schleswig assembly of estates, he joined the liberal parliamentary group and soon became one of the best-known speakers for the liberal MPs, who also supported Uwe Jens Lornsen .
Like Lornsen, Lorenzen himself spoke out in favor of a constitution for the duchies, which were to be linked in a confederation with the actual Kingdom of Denmark, without, however , demanding that Schleswig be accepted into the German Confederation . In 1836 he was able to ensure that the assemblies of the estates could meet in public. However, the demand for a free constitution failed due to resistance from the elites, including the large landowners. In 1838 Lorenzen published a map showing Sønderjylland or Schleswig, which was then a Danish fiefdom, as part of Denmark, which was met with protests from German-minded MPs. He called for the separation of budgetary policy between the kingdom and the duchies, but also that Danish should be introduced as the legal language in North Schleswig, where it had already been the language of church and school in advance .
The increasing nationalization of the liberal movement within the duchies ultimately led to a break with the German-oriented (national) liberals. Lorenzen resigned his mandate in the assembly of estates and approached the Danish national liberals. The composition of the Schleswig assembly of estates was based on a census suffrage, whereby the predominantly German-oriented upper class ( knighthood / nobility , large landowners and urban bourgeoisie ) was overrepresented there and the Danish side accordingly underrepresented. Lorenzen stayed in Copenhagen several times in 1842 and 1843 , took part in the Danish people's assembly at Skamlingsbanke in 1843 and was in contact with the Danish politician and pastor Christian Flor , among others . In 1941 he was re-elected to the Schleswig State Assembly for Sønderborg and from then on stood in clear opposition to the demands of the German National Liberals for Schleswig to join the German Confederation and the inheritance claims of Christian August von Augustenburg . Lorenzen is known to this day for his demands for linguistic and cultural equality of the Danes living in Schleswig . When Hjort Lorenzen addressed the delegates in Danish on November 11, 1842 , this sparked large protests on the part of the German-minded Schleswig-Holsteiners. From the minutes of the meeting of the estates comes the quotation which has become a popular saying “He continued to speak Danish”. As a result, the Danish king - in his role as Duke of Schleswig as a Danish fiefdom - announced in a "language patent" on March 29, 1844 that only those members of the Schleswig Estates who could not speak German enough would attend the meeting speak Danish at the meeting of estates. This led to Lorenzen and four other Danish-Schleswig deputies boycotting the following meetings, which in turn led to the Danish-oriented Schleswig Association being banned.
Finally, in March 1845, Lorenzen suddenly died of pneumonia .
memory
He is one of 18 deserving Danes who are named on the obelisk on Skamlingsbanken . In the city of Schleswig , a Danish school ( Hiort Lorenzen Skolen ) was later named after him .
