The Hochvernaglwand is a 3435 m high mountain in the Ötztal Alps . It is located exactly on the border between the Austrian state of Tyrol and the Italian province of South Tyrol .
Location and surroundings
The Hochvernaglwand is part of the Weißkamm of the Ötztal Alps. The Gepatschferner stretches north of the Hochvernaglwand , the glacier surface of which the summit barely towers above. Towards the south, on the other hand, towards the Hintereisferner , the mountain presents itself as a steep rock wall. The closest peaks in the Weißkamm are the Hintere Hintereisspitze ( 3485 m ) in the northeast and the Vernagl ( 3355 m ) in the southwest and, separated by the Langtauferer Joch, the Langtauferer Spitze ( 3528 m ).
Alpinism
The first ascent of the Hochvernaglwand is attributed to Franz Senn , who on July 20, 1870 together with the Berlin professor Dr. Scholz and the guide Josef Gstrein reached the summit. The normal route is an easy glacier hike from the Gepatschferner over gently rising firn to the summit. Nearby bases for mountaineers are the Brandenburger Haus in the northeast and the Weißkugelhütte in the west.
