Wallsee Castle in Merian (around 1670)

The Protestant wedding of Maria Salome von Kölnpöck and Ferdinand Pangraz Gienger zum Grienpichel took place on December 29, 1613 in Nieder-Wallsee Castle. Over 140 Protestant nobles were present and were accompanied by over 360 servants and 130 carriages.

general situation

The Protestant nobility in Austria under and over the Enns was spared by the "brotherly dispute" in the Habsburg ruling house between Rudolf II and Matthias .

In Inner Austria , Charles II began the Counter Reformation as early as the 1580s . His Jesuit- educated son Ferdinand II took more stringent measures after taking over government in 1596. From 1599 "Religious Reformation Commissions" under the leadership of Bishop Martin Brenner from Seckau carried out real "campaigns against Protestant citizens and farmers" with military support. Those who did not convert to the Catholic faith had to leave the country within a few weeks. From 1613, non-rural aristocrats were also attacked, and from August 1, 1628 against the (rural) class Protestant nobility of Inner Austria.

In Austria under and above the Enns, Rudolf II pursued a much more tolerant policy towards non-Catholics. In a dispute with his brother Matthias, both sides sought the favor of the Protestant Austrian nobility. The Evangelicals did not manage to organize a church system and so the church remained dominated and dependent on noble patrons . After the uprising of the Bohemian Confederation and the defeat in the Battle of the White Mountain in 1620, all Protestant pastors, preachers and schoolmasters were expelled from Lower Austria in 1627 . The land-based Austrian Protestant nobles were ordered to convert or leave the country. The measures were only implemented after 1650.

The groom Ferdinand Pankraz Freiherr von Gienger zu Grünbühel , Rabenstein an der Pielach and Ranzenbach, later Imperial Truchsess and Lower Austrian District Administrator, son of Niklas Gienger zu Grünbühel (1556–1636), since 1608 Baron, Lord of the Lords of Grünbühel, Rabenstein, Altenhofen and Ranzenbach (Gem. Kilb), later appointed to the nö knight class, and Maria Freiin von Windischgrätz , daughter of Pankratz Freiherr von Windischgrätz and Margaretha Ungnad von Weißenwolff . The bride Maria Salome Kölnpöck was the daughter of Nemrod Kölnpöckh zu Salaberg , Ottsdorf, Niederwallsee and Salome von Sinzendorf .

Hoheneck describes this wedding as " with just moderate splendor ", there were also predominantly people from the knight and baron class , ie not from the high nobility, present. The wedding took place at Wallsee Castle. Some of the sexes were originally Ministeriale of the Walsee , such as the Schifer, Geymann or Trauttmansdorff . The vast majority of those present were “Protestant” (= Lutheran, Evangelical or Calvinist ) and therefore in opposition to the Roman Catholic Emperor Matthias . At least eleven men are even signatories of the Horner Bund . In a few years (1620) the conflict in the Battle of the White Mountain was finally decided in favor of the emperor and the evangelical nobles felt the measures of the Counter-Reformation. The leaders are even executed, and as a result many emigrate to Germany or Hungary as exiles .
