Schlüßlberg Castle

The Schlüßlberg Castle is located in the same municipality in the district Grieskirchen of Upper Austria on the foothills of the Muller mountains.

history

The first documentary mention can be found in 1150 in Mondsee Monastery ; at that time a Herwort and Walchun de sluzilberch are called, who are considered to be the builders of the fortress. The purpose of this castle was to block access to the Trattnachtal . The Schlüsselbergs were a peasant family who rose to knighthood in the 14th century. It can be assumed that these were originally feudal people from Mondsee. In the fief book of Duke Albrecht III. but in 1380 and 1395 a Hans, a Chunrad and an Ulrich von Schlüßlberg are named. In 1404 Rudolf the Schifer followed the Schlüßlberger. Erasmus von Hohenfeld († 1461), caretaker of the Passau rule of Ebelsberg, bought the property from Rudolf Schifer's daughter Agnes on October 7, 1429. He probably had the Gothic chapel built. His son Christoph, the keeper of Wels, sold the castle to Christoff Jörger in 1472. On June 5, 1492, Wolfgang Prugkner and his wife Barbara bought the castle. In 1503 Schlüßlberg came to the Linz city judge Andreas Pruckner and his wife Magdalena.

In 1533 the castle came to the imperial councilor Hans Hoffmann by way of inheritance. Magdalena Hoffmann married Sebastian Sigmar, and they later called themselves Sigmar von Schlüßlberg. Both were Protestants and had to emigrate to Regensburg . In 1638 the property was squandered to Sebastian Helfried von Wopping because of the impending Counter-Reformation ; In 1650 the castle came first to Georg Ludwig von Oed and in the same year to Seyfried Hager von Allentsteig. The latter is likely to have converted the castle into a palace. In 1668 the property came to Johann Adam von Hoheneck, whose son Johann Georg Adam Freiherr von Hoheneck († 1754) converted Schlüßlberg with Trattenegg and Gallspach into a Fideikommiss in 1718 . After the male line of the Count von Hoheneck family died out in 1796, the family property was first given to the Barons of Imsland due to the extensive provisions of the Fideikommissstiftung deed; then followed in 1910 Sigmund Freiherr von Schneeburg († 1932) and this Hofrat Oswald Graf Spiegelfeld -Hoheneck (1936–1938 district captain of Grieskirchen). The Fideikommiss existed until 1938 (forced dissolution by the National Socialist administration). In 1963 the long-time mayor of Schlüßlberg Sigmund Spiegelfeld-Schneeburg took over the property from his father, in 1980 his son Georg followed .

description

Today's Schlüßlberg Castle is a three-storey square building from the 17th century with a medieval core. In the 18th century, the complex was partially baroque (various stucco ceilings). The entrance tower in front of it with an onion helmet dates from 1690. The Hohenecker coat of arms can be seen as a fresco on the gate tower . Next to the gate there is a house and an agricultural farm building from the 17th century. The actual castle is behind it. In front of the castle is a Meierhof , above is a game reserve with fallow deer.

The castle chapel is dedicated to St. George consecrated. It is a Gothic building before 1431 and was converted to Baroque style in 1708. The chapel and the rooms with stucco ceilings were restored in 1953. In 1970 the north-facing wall that collapsed towards the gate was rebuilt and the entire complex was completely renovated in the 1980s and 1990s.

Today, Schlüßlberg is owned by a private foundation that can be attributed to Georg Spiegelfeld-Schneeburg.
