Observation tower

The Carl-Eduard -Warte ( Lage ), inaugurated on August 27, 1911, stands on the summit and was built by the Carl-Eduard-Stiftung after two previous towers had not been built according to the prevailing weather conditions and had to be demolished.

Building history

The first tower was erected in 1858 by the Elgersburg bath doctor, Sanitary Councilor Hermann Piutti (1812–1865), using funds from the bathing establishment's beautification fund. He fell victim to a violent storm on November 1, 1859. The second, more solid tower was built in 1860, but had to be demolished after six years due to its dilapidation. In 1899, the spa doctor and spa house owner Dr. Barwinski founded the association "Elgersburger Ritterschaft", which had the purpose of the association to maintain sociability and to erect a massive tower on the Hohewartekopf. After a design from 1909 was accepted, the foundation stone was laid on September 18, 1910 after donations of 30,000 marks had been raised. The construction work was carried out by the company Kögler from Ilmenau , the porphyry quarry in the vicinity supplied most of the building material. At the beginning of winter, the work had to be interrupted when the tower was seven meters high. The work continued in the following spring. At the same time the farm building next door was built. The inauguration ceremony took place on August 27, 1911, and the farm building was in the shell. The 27-year-old Duke Carl Eduard von Sachsen-Coburg and Gotha , his 26-year-old wife, Duchess Victoria Adelheid , Minister of State Ernst von Richter , Landtag President Otto Liebetrau , the pharmacist Kleeberg (Burgrave Elger XXX. Der Elgersburg), the godchild of the were present Elgersburger Knighthood, Hiltrud Kleeberg, and numerous guests. Contrary to a cost estimate of 26,000 marks, the total costs now amounted to 64,000 marks, which brought the knighthood into dire straits. Emergency money was issued, the net profit of which could be used to repay most debts. The first host was the owner of the "Herzog Ernst" hotel from Elgersburg, Paul Merker.

From the 33 meter high observation tower you have a good view of the Schneekopf with Gehlberg , the Inselsberg , Oberhof , Gotha and Erfurt , the Ettersberg near Weimar , Ilmenau , and the surrounding villages of Geschwenda , Geraberg , Elgersburg with the motorway bridges "Zahme Gera" and "Reichenbachtal" .

There is also an excursion restaurant with a beer garden on the summit, where the tickets for climbing the tower are also sold.
